Job Description

An Environmental Services Aide (Housekeeping) is required to perform a variety of cleaning and related duties in order to maintain the cleanliness of a specified (assigned) area of the facility. All tasks within this position will be performed in accordance with departmental policies, procedures and work routines.

LINES OF REPORTING

  • The Environmental Services Aide (Housekeeping) role falls within the Environmental Services Department budget
  • The Environmental Services Aide (Housekeeping) reports directly to the Director of Environmental Services

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Will perform daily shift routines as well as periodic and project cleaning tasks, as required or scheduled, in order to maintain the cleanliness of an assigned area of the facility.

Cleaning and cleaning related duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Floor Maintenance
    • Sweep, dust, damp mop.
    • Scrub/strip, seal and refinishing (waxing).
    • Safe use/operation of all floor care equipment (i.e.: polisher, auto scrubber, burnisher/scrubber).
  • Handling of Hazardous / Non-Hazardous Cleaning Products
    • Using proper safety precautions (reference MSDS) and personal protective equipment.
    • Prepares germicide solutions using established dilution formulas, labeling system, usage and storage methods.

  • Carpet Maintenance & Upholstery Furnishings
    • Use of carpet care equipment i.e.: various vacuums (regular or wet/dry type).
    • Carpet shampoo equipment and upholstery connector equipment.
  • Use of miscellaneous equipment for cleaning process (high and low cleaning).
    • Step stools, ladders or scaffolding, high/low ergonomic stools.
    • Ergonomic extension equipment used for window cleaning, wall washing and high level dusting (i.e.: ledges, wardrobe tops).
  • Washroom Cleaning
    • Toilets, sinks, bathtubs, fixtures, and showers.
  • Empty Waste Receptacles
    • Empty and transport waste to designated area using transport truck.
  • Replenish Supplies (cleaning and non-cleaning products) to:
    • Assigned janitor carts / stations.
    • Assigned resident rooms.
    • Assigned staff and public areas.
  • Adheres to all administrative policies and procedures at all times.
  • Adheres to the Resident Bill of Rights at all times.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Exhibits a commitment to our culture of safety by protecting their own safety as well as the safety of others, including residents, co-workers, volunteers, & visitors by:
    • Reporting harm or injury, near-misses and any potential hazards so that the Home can investigate and learn from these incidents to improve its safety practices.
    • Attend all relevant in services regarding health and safety.
      • Follow all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Ace and its regulations
      • Supporting a safe, productive, co-operative work environment, free from bullying, harassment and violence
  • Will perform various administrative and interactive tasks which support and contribute to the operation of a safe, professional, efficient, and effective housekeeping service, such as:
    • Participate actively in orientation training of new employees.
    • Participate actively in department staff meetings.
    • Provide input into the development of departmental policies and procedures.
    • Read, interpret and adhere to departmental policies and procedures, memos, notes and meeting minutes.
    • Participate actively in cleanliness inspections.
  • Will perform all duties and responsibilities in a manner which supports a commitment to the following:
    • Safe work practices (Health and Safety in the Workplace).
    • Preventive maintenance programs involving equipment used and work/resident environment (non-mechanical).
    • Quality Control programs.
    • Infection Control programs.
    • A cooperative interactive work environment.
  • Performs other related/nonrelated duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

  • Secondary school diploma is an asset
  • Must be physically able to perform all duties and responsibilities
  • Must be able to read and interpret policies, procedures, work routines, labels etc.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Bondable by authorized bonding company
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team environment
  • A positive attitude towards the F.J. Davey Home with a genuine interest in working with the elderly
  • Must be able to demonstrate a good previous attendance and performance record
  • Ability to work various shifts and days of the week
  • Knowledge of Infection Control processes is an asset
  • Experience in a commercial and/or a health care cleaning environment will be considered an asset
  • Previous experience using commercial cleaning equipment
