Job Description

Permanant Part Time (65 Hours bi-weekly)

The work includes administration, and departmental and clinical duties. Specific activities include:

  • Providing physiotherapy intervention under the direction of a PT.
  • Instructing patients and offering guidance with their planned treatment programmer; Modalities; ultra sound, Tens, ice, heat, hot wax etc.
  • Programs such as physical, sensory, & restorative.
  • Treatments such as pedals, pulleys, & strengthening exercises, PROM, AAROM
  • Offering general support to the physiotherapist;
  • Monitoring the progress of patients and reporting back to the physiotherapist.

Under the guidance of a physiotherapist provide feedback on service users’ physical functioning and assist in the implementation, evaluation and modification of physiotherapy and team interventions. Under the clinical / professional supervision of an physiotherapist, provide a range of physiotherapy programs, instructing and guiding clients to support them in achieving identified goals. Be aware of, and apply, the principle of risk assessment and management to all aspects of clinical work.

To form professional relationships with service users, team members, colleagues and external agencies. To communicate effectively and appropriately with team members on clinical matters. Use a variety of communication skills to instruct and guide individuals / groups of service users in the use of therapeutic activities.

To participate in the induction, training and education of students and other staff. To participate in the dissemination and sharing of information and skills with staff, students and volunteers.

The role involves taking responsibility for equipment/ modalities and keeping working areas clean and tidy. To be responsible for the preparation, maintenance and care of equipment, ensuring a safe environment for clients and staff as appropriate.

To exercise good personal time management, punctuality and consistent reliable attendance.

Keep up-to-date with relevant techniques and methods of practice and apply it on a day-to-day basis. To participate in Physiotherapy / Team audit and evaluation activities and projects as agreed with supervisor.

Assist in the training/education of co-op students thereby enhancing their learning abilities

Work in cooperation with volunteers to enhance the quality of restorative and physiotherapy programs

Encourage resident and family participation in programs and program planning

Monitor residents progress during treatment and record their progress. Develop and revise ongoing Restorative/physio care plan “B” for each individual resident treated.

Complete quarterly summaries for assigned residents. Summaries are to be completed at similar times to the nursing summaries

Report any significant changes to the resident’s behavior or condition to the physiotherapist and the appropriate nursing staff and record incidents in the resident’s chart

Attend interdisciplinary care conferences as required sharing pertinent information with other departments. Ensure information from these conferences is shared with other appropriate staff members through the communication book and/or at department meetings

Attend department meetings on a regular basis to share information on programs, resident’s needs, availability of resources and department goals.

To participate in In-services and staff development programs adhering to established department policies and procedures regarding quality improvement, fire, safety, environment and infection control.

Participate in the development and revision of programs under the guidance of the physiotherapist. Provide evaluation of programs, resident needs, department and committees, etc.

Other responsibilities as assigned.

Working conditions

Some irregular hours may be required. Frequent use of assistive devices, adaptive equipment, exercise equipment and modalities.

Knowledge/ experience and Skills

  • Successful completion of post-secondary diploma in a recognized physiotherapy/occupational therapy assistant program
  • Experience in long term care setting preferred
