Position Summary:

We are seeking highly motivated and experienced Community Health Ambassadors - Youth Outreach Workers to join our Youth Violence Prevention team. The successful candidates will be responsible for community engagement and connecting with and supporting MVP youths (youths most vulnerable to involvement in serious violence and crime) in the Flemingdon Park community. This is a unionized position.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with youths by actively listening to their needs, playing games, organizing and participating in field trips, and providing guidance on healthy approaches to stress and interpersonal relationships.
  • Conducting grant writing to secure additional funds for programming purposes.
  • Facilitate activities, workshops and co-creating youth programs related to violence prevention.
  • Attending professional development workshops as recommended by the supervisor.
  • Connect youths to support systems in their own community, including mental health resources, employment services, and other social services.
  • Aid youths in improving their social skills and becoming more involved in leisure and recreational activities.
  • Advocate for youths’ perspectives by conducting outreach, influencing policy, and participating in community-level committees and forums.
  • Collaborate with community partners and stakeholders to maximize support for youths in the community.
  • Regularly communicate with Youth Advisors to ensure they have a clear understanding of the project's progress and to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Provide regular progress updates on Youth Peer Work to members of the Steering Committee.
  • All other associated tasks as determined by the project coordinator and partner agency staff.

Qualifications:

  • Must be between the ages of 16 and 29
  • Formal or informal mentorship, group, or peer work experience
  • Familiar with community resources and navigation for justice-involved, gang-involved, or gang-affiliated youth
  • Leadership, communication, and organizational skills are an asset
  • Collaboratively maintain a professional relationship between youth advisors and youth peer workers
