About Burnaby Hospital:

Burnaby Hospital is a large urban community hospital that serves the City of Burnaby and East Vancouver. The Emergency Department itself is a high volume site, with 80,000 to 85,000 patients per year, and has a nice mix of patient presentations and acuity.

The site offers extensive services to support the Emergency Department, including: ICU with overnight coverage, Internal Medicine/Cardiology, a robust Hospitalist program, General Surgery, Urology, Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, ENT, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Gastroenterology, GI bleed service, Respirology, onsite Neurology for acute stroke management, Pediatrics consults, Psychiatry, Addictions Medicine, Palliative care and a full complement of medical imaging modalities. Neurosurgical, Vascular Surgery, Interventional Cardiology/STEMI, Interventional Radiology/EVT and multisystem trauma cases are transferred seamlessly to the Royal Columbian Hospital, which is a 15 minute drive away. We have also developed many pathways for moving patients through the Emergency Department with outpatient specialty clinics to provide seamless follow up. These include the first outpatient DVT and low risk PE program in North America, rapid access chest pain clinic, rapid access internal medicine clinic, rapid access respirology clinic, rapid access pediatrics clinic and rapid access neurology clinic.

Above all, collegiality, efficiency and serving our community are what defines us as a hospital.

Hospital Redevelopment:

Burnaby Hospital is currently undergoing a $2.4B multiphase redevelopment to increase capacity and services for our community. Phase 1 is set to open in November 2025 and includes a brand new 24 bed acute care space for the Emergency Department, which includes a state of the art resuscitation room and new psychiatric emergency care space. Phase 2 involves the construction of a new 160 bed inpatient care tower and significant expansion of the emergency department to over 100 care spaces and dedicated medical imaging (CT, Xray, Ultrasound) in our department. Phase 2 construction begins later this year and is slated to be completed in 2030.

Our Group of Emergency Physicians:

Our collegial, cohesive and supportive group of emergency physicians includes a mix of recent FRCP and CCFP(EM) graduates, internationally trained physicians, mid-career physicians and seasoned emergency physicians who have spent their entire career in our department. Our shift scheduling is flexible but equitable, and accommodates many different physician preferences for shift distribution. Shift trades are generally easy to make and are facilitated by our scheduling software. We have established maternity/paternity leave, vacation allocation and senior-member policies.

Education Opportunities:

Burnaby Hospital is a popular site for medical students and residents. We rotate our local Family Practice residents and third year UBC medical students through our site and frequently also have Emergency Medicine residents on elective. We get positive feedback about the department culture, patient mix and hands on learning at our site. Although we often have learners with us on shift, we limit to no more than two learners in the department at one time and aim for fewer than 20% of each physician's shifts to be with learners.

As we are a teaching site, a faculty appointment in the University of British Columbia Dept. of Emergency Medicine is required for overseeing and getting compensated for on shift teaching. We will work with you to obtain this designation. Once connected with UBC, many opportunities exist for further involvement in education in both undergraduate and postgraduate medicine.

Quality improvement, research, simulation and physician leadership training are highly supported by our hospital Medical Staff Association and many funded opportunities exist for those interested in these areas.

Location and Lifestyle:

Burnaby Hospital is centrally located in the heart of the lower mainland, and nestled in a predominantly residential community with nearby parkland. It is a 15 minute drive to downtown Vancouver and all the cultural amenities, 15 minutes to North Vancouver and all the outdoor amenities, right at the highway to New Westminster, Tri-Cities, Surrey and the Fraser Valley with many options for housing.

The Metro Vancouver region is known internationally for our cosmopolitan cities with a mild climate, clean air, beautiful skyline and incredible access to nature. We have world class skiing, mountain biking, climbing, hiking, beaches, boating, restaurants, arts and entertainment all within minutes of our emergency department doors.

Compensation and Shift Structure:

Compensation is based on a Fee-For-Service payment model. Average income for a full-time Emergency Physician is $400,000 - $450,000 per year, with opportunities to earn more based on individual efficiency.

Shift requirement:

  • Full time: 12 shifts per month
  • Part time: 6-8 shifts per month
  • Locum/Temporary: Flexible

We are looking to hire applicants who will contribute to increasing the diversity of our site.
