We are hiring for a Casual Medical Transcriptionist (Medical Imaging) at Surrey Memorial Hospital.

 

Education, Training and Experience

  • Grade 12, graduation from an approved program in Medical Transcription plus one year's recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Surrey Memorial Hospital is the largest of three regional hospitals in Fraser Health’s integrated network of care, with 624 acute care beds, and 36 neonatal intensive care (NICU) bassinettes. Surrey Memorial Hospital provides primary, secondary, and tertiary services, including 24/7 emergency (including a dedicated pediatrics emergency area), cardiac and critical care, levels one, two and three obstetrics and neonatal intensive care, adolescent and adult inpatient psychiatry, surgical sub-specialties (e.g., plastics, thoracic, vascular, orthopedic), inpatient rehabilitation and ambulatory care. Surrey Memorial Hospital is the second largest hospital in the province with the province’s busiest Emergency Department. Surrey Memorial Hospital provides specialized care to people from across Fraser Health, not only to residents of Surrey.

Detailed Overview

Transcribes and types a variety of medical dictation and other documentation such as diagnostic radiology reports, medical consults and clinical histories from a centralized dictation system utilizing the Radiology Information System, computerized equipment and intermediate word processing software. Responds to work status enquiries, photocopies, faxes and distributes reports in accordance with established procedures as assigned.


Responsibilities


  1. Transcribes and types a variety of medical dictation and other documentation such as diagnostic radiology reports, medical consults and clinical histories. Receives work requisitions and types designated material from dictation tapes and/or a computerized dictation system into the Radiology Information System and/or inputs comprehensive medical terminology data into a personal computer utilizing intermediate word processing software packages.
  2. Edits transcribed material for stylistic consistency and accuracy of content by identifying medical and verbal inconsistencies in dictation and correcting/resolving by querying supervisor and/or physician as required. Ensures format, punctuation and grammar are correct by proofreading and revising document as required and in accordance with departmental standards. Forwards completed documents to designated staff for approval according to established departmental procedures and makes report corrections as required.
  3. Responds to enquiries related to work status by methods such as checking database for document status and providing information regarding originating date, time completed/time to be completed in accordance with departmental standards.
  4. Participates in quality assurance by performing duties such as identifying problems and/or inconsistencies and providing feedback and recommendations to supervisor.
  5. Monitors condition of equipment and reports malfunctions to supervisor.
  6. Photocopies, faxes and distributes material such as reports to designated personnel in accordance with departmental procedures by receiving request and operating related equipment.
  7. Performs a variety of clerical duties such as answering telephone and maintaining files and records on items such as types of reports completed.
  8. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately reports unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience


Grade 12, graduation from an approved program in Medical Transcription plus one year's recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to keyboard at 60 wpm.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
