Detailed Overview

Under the direction of the Manager or Supervisor, performs pacemaker analysis and programs pacemakers to correct values/optimal settings within clinics, operating rooms or various areas of the hospital. Within the OR, assists the surgeon during implant procedures. Performs a variety of tests such as Electro Cardiogram (ECG) testing, stress testing, holter and pacemaker programming, monitoring and other related procedures; provides interpretations, analyses and test/summary reports, as required. Monitors pacemaker functions; reports on abnormalities and responds to queries including troubleshooting. Participates in the development and review of standards, procedures and instructional material relevant to the department's pacemaker services; assists in the training and orientation of staff and Surgery/Cardiology Residents in pacemaker functions and programming applications.
Responsibilities


  1. Reviews and maintains records relevant to patient history, vital signs and pacemaker details.
  2. Performs pacemaker analysis and programs pacemakers in pacemaker clinics, operating rooms or various areas of the hospital. Within the OR, duties include assisting the surgeon during implant procedures. Sets individual pacemakers to correct values/optimal settings during or post implant.
  3. Performs a variety of tests such as determining capture and sensing thresholds of implanted leads, and making mathematical calculations to determine optimum safety values of pacemaker, in order to assess pacemaker function. Maintains records of data obtained for review by the physician; provides interpretations, analyses and test/summary reports as required.
  4. Performs Electro Cardiogram (ECG) testing, stress testing, holter and pacemaker programming/monitoring and other related procedures. Scans and analyses ECG stress and holter monitor test strips; selects and assesses portions of test strips and summarizes for interpretation by physician/medical staff. Analyses the data from the various tests and records the relevant data/information for interpretation by the Cardiologist.
  5. Monitors cardiac pacemakers and notifies Cardiologist of abnormalities; contacts patients for repeat recordings, as required. Cuts, mounts and trims tracing for interpretation by Cardiologist, enters data from tracings into computer; files completed records according to department procedures.
  6. Acts as a resource to physicians and other health providers relevant to pacemaker functions by providing information, troubleshooting, etc.
  7. Responds to queries from various internal and external sources regarding pacemaker functions and their manifestations in the patients and various recordings.
  8. Participates in the development and review of standards, procedures and instructional material relevant to the department's pacemaker services.
  9. Assists in the training and orientation of staff and Surgery/Cardiology Residents in pacemaker functions and programming by demonstrating specific applications as directed by the Physician.
  10. Provides orientation and training to Pacemaker/ECG staff and other Hospital staff as directed.
  11. Participates in the review, evaluation and selection of pacemakers and provides implant recommendations.
  12. Explains procedures to and answers related questions from patients in preparation for testing.
  13. Maintains related equipment to ensure safe and effective functioning; performs routine quality control checks; cleans and replaces items as required; arranges for maintenance and repairs as required.
  14. Monitors supply levels and places orders, handles intracardiac diagnostic equipment such as catheters, pacemaker electrodes, generators, leads, needles, fittings and attachments.
  15. Distributes individual patient reports to the appropriate wards and/or departments.
  16. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Completion of a recognized Cardiology Technology Program at the Diploma level plus successful completion of a recognized pacemaker specialty exam, plus two (2) years recent related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Canadian Society of Cardiology Technologists (CSCT) certified.
