Detailed Overview

Reporting operationally to the Manager, Clinical Operations and clinically to the Clinical Practice Leader, the Psychologist, Pain Clinic works as a part of an interprofessional team. The Psychologist provides consultations, assessments, group and individual therapy in the complex pain intervention/management program using a variety of modalities and in accordance with professional standards and clinical policies and practices.


Responsibilities


  1. Provides psychological assessments to identify, evaluate, and determine underlying disorders, levels of cognitive function, factors contributing to functional impairment, issues of mental competency, and conditions under which specific behaviors occur. Primarily clinical assessment and short-term psychological treatment for patients with complex pain. Group treatment, both education and therapy, will be part of the responsibility.
  2. Ensures screening, comprehensive assessment, care planning, and treatment for clients and their families referred to Pain Clinic services.
  3. Documents information including relevant clinical data, assessment information, treatment plans, and progress reports in accordance with established policies, standards and procedures.
  4. Provides education on complex pain management, mental health, and addictions to patients and their caregivers. Supports the development of evidence-based clinical guidelines and pathways for chronic pain patients clients across the hospital and community.
  5. Monitors and evaluates guidelines and pathways for their effectiveness, and assists with the analysis of data in order to make necessary adjustments. Contributes to the development of policies and procedures that will guide the care of clients.
  6. Participates in ongoing clinical research to keep program content current and relevant, and provides education to team members in this regard.
  7. Acquires and maintains appropriate testing and clinical materials. Prepares and presents reports and proposals that support clinical practice as well as program research and evaluation.
  8. Attends and participates in appropriate interprofessional conferences, medical rounds, service and department meetings.
  9. May be asked to supervise graduate students in psychology.
  10. Maintains and updates knowledge in complex pain management, mental health, and addictions through methods such as reviewing literature, communication with other professionals and attendance at relevant education programs in order to contribute to continuing improvement of care.
  11. Participates in the short and long-term planning for the Regional Pain Program as a member of the interprofessional team through methods such as evaluating the effectiveness of treatment within the services, identifying opportunities for change and formulating recommendations to ensure optimal outcomes are met.
  12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience


Ph.D. in Psychology from a University or school recognized by the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia (CHCPBC). Current registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia (CHCPBC). Two (2) years recent related experience in complex pain management or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the interactions between pain, addictions and mental disorders.
  • Knowledge of complex pain assessment tools. Exercise sound judgment, decision-making and problem solving.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of an interprofessional team. Ability to plan and organize workload and establish priorities.
  • Knowledge of community dynamics, agencies and resources.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Knowledge of non-violent crisis intervention.
