Detailed Overview

Reporting to the Supervisor, the Radiology Porter Aide practices in accordance with the standards of professional practice as well as utilizing a client and family centered care model and the vision and values of the department within Fraser Health (FH).

The Radiology Porter Aide acts as a member of an integrated team within a high volume medical imaging environment by performing duties such as transporting clients to and from required areas using stretchers and wheelchairs, assisting technical and nursing staff with the lifting and transferring of clients, maintaining supplies for various carts, cupboards, trays, rooms and storage areas and cleaning equipment and supply areas as required. Maintains a clean and safe work environment.


Responsibilities


  1. Transports clients to and from required areas utilizing prescribed safety techniques as well as mechanical aides such as specialty beds, mobilizers, wheelchairs and stretchers by checking daily schedule for portering information, organizing workload and picking up/moving clients from various locations to ensure prompt arrival at specified location.
  2. Assists with mobilization of clients, as directed by technical and/or nursing staff by positioning, lifting and/or transferring clients on and off beds, treatment tables, stretchers and wheelchairs, following prescribed safe techniques and lifting practices such as utilizing mechanical lifts and/or slide boards as required.
  3. Monitors inventories in procedure rooms, utility areas, supply cupboards, carts and outpatient areas by methods such as daily reviewing core supplies to identify depleting stock, initiating purchase requisition by notifying Supervisor of depleting stock, receiving supplies from Stores, and checking ordered supplies match those received. Replenishes items such as linen, contrast, needles, swabs, syringes and drapes by unpacking supplies upon receipt and storing in appropriate areas; tidies supply cupboards, shelves or patient areas as required.
  4. Cleans and maintains wheelchairs and stretchers by methods such as replacing linen on stretchers, spot-cleaning wheeled equipment using disinfectant solution, performing equipment counts and reporting repair requirements to Supervisor.
  5. Maintains oxygen and suction supplies on stretchers and in procedure rooms by methods such as checking to ensure tanks are full, changing tanks when required and applying new regulators, checking suctions are clean and available on all stretchers and procedure rooms.
  6. Assists room turn-over at procedure completion by performing duties related to laundry and garbage removal and general cleaning.
  7. Assists technologist and nursing staff with handling of the patients by obtaining necessary blankets, toys, bottles, food and drinks for specific procedures.
  8. Transports items such as exam results or specimens to and from Radiology, various wards, Pharmacy or Laboratory Medicine.
  9. Performs clerical duties such as answering telephones, arranging additional portering support, and transporting client films and/or requisitions as directed by Supervisor.
  10. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately reports unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel.
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience


Grade 12 and two (2) years’ recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
