Detailed Overview

The Recreation Assistant carries out established recreation programs that support residents' health and well-being.
Responsibilities


  1. Carries out resident recreation/leisure programs such as arts and crafts, sports, music, woodworking, cooking, horticulture, pool programs, cultural events, and community outings; sets up and organizes furnishings and equipment for activity projects, teaches the techniques of related activities to residents; oversees resident activities and reports problems and/or changes to the Recreation Coordinator.
  2. Carries out resident recreation/leisure programs outside the facility; checks that residents have appropriate clothing and necessary equipment for the activity; confirms details of proposed activity with nursing/medical staff; coordinates the movement of residents during the activity and teaches the techniques of related activities.
  3. Provides direction to volunteers during activity programs and demonstrates related techniques and provides feedback as required.
  4. Prepares food items with residents by counting, weighing and/or measuring ingredients, mixing beverage and food items and assembling food items.  Portions out and serves food and beverages.
  5. Maintains inventory of equipment, tools and materials and reports malfunctioning equipment and supply needs to the Recreation Coordinator.
  6. Organizes and maintains program activity areas.
  7. Provides input and feedback with respect to recreation/leisure activities at regular planning meetings, such as resident participation in activities.
  8. Drives residents to and from outings and accompanies residents.  Operates passenger transportation vehicle.
  9. Performs other related duties as assigned.

 


Qualifications

Education and Experience

Grade 12, completion of recognized recreational courses plus two years of recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Valid Class 4 BC Driver's License (unrestricted). Food Safe Certificate. Current certification in Basic First Aid and CPR Level C.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
