Detailed Overview
The Supervisor, Dietitian Services is responsible for leading and coordinating the provision of nutrition care to patients in an assigned area; oversees Dietitian services and liaises with program managers to support other clinical nutrition programs; recommends and implements changes related to resources, systems and procedures in the area of clinical nutrition for all dietitians within their bargaining unit for an assigned area. Carries a clinical caseload as required.
Responsibilities
- Supervises designated staff by assigning work, providing feedback and evaluation, determining training needs including implementing staff development plans, professional competency requirements and orientating new staff; reviews workload assignments including defining role expectations; analyzes and recommends specific credentials and skill requirements to support effective and efficient patient care delivery; participates in the recruitment and selection of clinical dietitians and other designated staff; ensures proper credentialing for all dietitians within their bargaining unit; jointly participates in staff performance evaluations for program-based dietitians with program manager.
- Participates and provides input in the planning, implementation and evaluation of Clinical Nutrition Services including acute care, long term care, out-patient counseling and program-based clinical nutrition services.
- Provides clinical direction and/or supervision to designate staff who provide direct patient care by determining appropriate nutrition intervention through physician/health team referral, risk screening and/or patient assessment; develops, implements, evaluates and provides clinical feedback on a patient care plan; consults with health care team members regarding current standards of practice and clinical best practices.
- Develops, plans, implements, monitors, evaluates and revises Clinical Nutrition Service standards of practice, clinical nutrition standards, policies and procedures and quality improvement programs, in collaboration with Clinical Practice Leader (CPL) for Dietitian services.
- Participates in the development of clinical goals and objectives for Dietitian Services and program managed dietitian services by standardizing regional practices and policies by providing input and recommendations to the CPL and program managers.
- Acts as a clinical resource to all dietitians and provides clinical direction in dietetic practice as required; liaises with and provides nutrition expertise to members of the health care team.
- Performs quality improvement program duties by attending and participating in related meetings and/or conducting, implementing and evaluating in-service sessions; implements and evaluates quality improvement/risk management principles by monitoring/responding to clinical indicators and client satisfaction surveys.
- Participates in research, evaluation and specifications of new products/equipment; provides input into capital and operating budgets for the department and liaising with program managers; monitors expenditures and activities to ensure consistency with budgetary goals and program objectives; participates in the menu revision process to reflect changes in nutritional guidelines/initiatives.
- Compiles statistical data, prepares related reports and submits to the Clinical Practice Leader and program managers, as required; participates in the development, implementation and monitoring of workload measurements to meet internal and external reporting requirements and to guide clinical resource allocation.
- Maintains and uses current file of resources to support clinical nutrition practice in the area of responsibility; provides and evaluates direct patient education for inpatient and outpatient programs and program-based nutrition services, as assigned.
- Maintains current knowledge of developments and trends in clinical practice and leadership skills by reviewing literature and attending approved educational programs.
- Coordinates nutrition education opportunities for designated staff as needed; participates in patient care conferences and care plans, as required.
- Implements and monitors nutrition care plans and documents the nutrition care process using current standards of care; screens and identifies patients requiring nutrition care using established departmental procedures of audits, food service and nursing kardex reviews and/or information management systems.
- Participates in various hospital/health region committees regarding the review/revision of current practice, procedures and new trends; participates in the planning of new facilities and programs by providing clinical input and recommendations, as requested.
- Participates in other department, regional and external meetings and activities, preparing related reports and/or providing input as needed.
- Carries a clinical caseload as required; assesses, plans, implements and evaluates treatment of assigned patients.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education, Training and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition from a recognized educational institution and successful completion of an accredited dietetic internship program. Four (4) years' recently related experience in clinical nutrition in an acute care setting, including one (1) year experience in a leadership/supervisory role, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Current registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia.
Meets additional qualifications as defined in Restricted Activities A, B and C as set out in the College Bylaws.
