we are seeking a WELLNESS MENTOR to join our Intervention Team!

Wellness mentor Provide one on one support to students and/or engage in targeted groups: this involves a process of engagement, data collection and general assessment for case planning, intervention, and evaluation. Within this process Wellness Mentors focus on providing emotional support regarding current and/or specific problems in the emotional and social/relationship domain, as well as providing information and advice, and supporting skill building regarding the self-regulation of feelings and behaviors, positive well-being and healthy living, healthy relationships, stress management, problem solving and decision making, crisis management, and conflict resolution. Wellness Mentors may need to perform ASIST’s, support abuse disclosures, and engage in VTRA in this process.

We have implemented early dismissal, for students, on Fridays, to give more flexibility in schedules, for colleagues to meet, collaborate, and learn within working hours.

Job Duties:

Be a consistent and positive role model to children and youth.

Facilitate a psychologically safe school environment and establish positive expectations for children and youth.

Keep up to date contact notes from sessions with students and document contact with parents, school staff, and community agencies.

Keep up to date statistics of the program such as numbers on caseload, referrals received by each school, number of needs identified across their caseload, etc.

Meet with parents and guardians regarding informed consent, to provide updates regarding service and make suggestions regarding the wellbeing of the student, to disclose major concerns (suicide, self-harm, abuse disclosures, etc.), and to provide the parents with resources for further support.

Act as case coordinator for the student and communicate with teachers, administrators, and other school staff regarding the student’s needs, the level of support needed, the support that the wellness mentor can provide, and the outcomes of the service being provided.

Communicate with community agencies to facilitate referrals and to advocate for the needs of students from a community perspective. This may involve linking parents to parenting supports, referring students to mental health or outside counseling, and taking the time to research supports that are available.

Provide information to the school community and parents/guardians to foster greater understanding of mental health issues and the impact of trauma.

Stay up to date on recent approaches and methods for managing the difficulties that students are experiencing.

Attend supervision/consultation time and consult regarding one-on-one work with students, ethical dilemmas that arise during service, professional boundaries, and professional development and growth.

Attend team meetings that focus on team administration and organization needs, professional development, and team unity.

Attend student support services meetings provided by the district.

Strong understanding and appreciation of Grasslands Public Schools mission and values.

Proven Cultural, Diversity and Inclusion Competencies and able to apply these competencies to all aspects of the job

Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills and able to deliver programming and initiatives through public speaking

Flexible and able to work independently, as a team and with community agencies

Strong organizational and time management skills and the able to prioritize multiple demands

Strong computer skills; able to pick up new and existing programs relate to the job quickly

Able to establish trust and rapport with students

Preferred Education & Experience:

Post-secondary Education or Relevant Training health or social sciences field preferred

Experienced in working with diverse and multicultural populations

Minimum 2 years’ experience working with children and adults in large and small group settings
