Description
Under the direction of the Chief Engineer or Facilities Manager, the Control and Instrumentation Technician is responsible for the daily programming, repair, maintenance, installation, commissioning and general servicing of HVAC Controls / Building Automation System, and related controls and equipment throughout the building.
The Control and Instrumentation Technician must possess the necessary skills with respect to setting priorities and is responsible for high levels of client satisfaction throughout the building. Strong communication skills are required to ensure clear and open lines of communication, while representing the Engineering department in a positive manner.
Major Duties
- Responsible for troubleshooting, testing, programming, start up, and servicing of all HVAC controls and BAS system components
- Performs the day to day system and operational checks, inspections, troubleshooting, testing, maintenance, preventative maintenance, and repairs
- Extensive knowledge of building systems and services, electrical, pneumatic, and electronic interface and control devices with the expertise to interpret mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic control drawings
- May create control programs, drawings, plans, and specifications, to mount, assemble, test, and program the system and/or system components
- Develops, monitors, maintains equipment and building time of day schedules as required
- Creating, editing, troubleshooting system software, graphics, points and programming as required
- Analyze and recommend system solutions for complex BAS/HVAC problems
- Other duties related to the commissioning and servicing of building controls
- Provide technical input to the resolution of maintenance problems, material standards, purchase of new equipment and capital projects
- Identify energy saving opportunities through data and trend analysis
- Responsible for creating, maintaining, and/or updating all applicable records, drawings and schematics
- Responsible for working with the Development team and outside Contractors with shutdowns, print review, attending commissioning orientation, and all necessary training required on project completion
- Responsible to perform all required preventative maintenance work necessary to meet the hospital and code requirements
- Coordinates the activities of external service providers as directed
- Performs all work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and all of its applicable regulations. Responsible for adhering to all applicable health and safety policies, procedures and provisions established by the hospital. Responsible for recognizing unsafe work practices and hazards in the work place, and for ensuring that these situations are corrected and, where corrective action cannot be taken, reports to his/her immediate supervisor or delegate
- Performs all duties in strict compliance with applicable legislation, codes, standards, rules, and regulations
- Attends and participates in meetings, professional development training and all hospital and departmental orientation programs as assigned
- Trains and directs the activities of apprentices and/or semi-skilled trades assigned to assist them in their work
- Other assigned duties, which are, or become relevant to the general day-to-day operation, consistent with the duties and activities normally considered part of the Building Controls Technician area of responsibility

Qualifications
- Community College Certificate in Instrumentation Control Technician or equivalent industrial sector experience as a Technologist or Technician, relating to Building Automation and Controls systems.
- Minimum of five years’ experience working as a Control and Instrumentation Technician on Building Automation Systems
- Experience with using the Johnson Controls Building Automation software Metasys an asset.
- A demonstrated knowledge and understanding of pneumatics, thermodynamics, electrical, instrumentation, mechanical, and electronic systems and controls.
- Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, think analytically, and with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to use the tools and equipment of the trade.
- Experience in Microsoft Office
- Must be able to bend, crawl, lift heavy items, climb and work from ladders and scaffolds.
