The Pediatric Occupational Therapist is part of the interdisciplinary team that provides direct patient care within the Pediatric Complex Care and Pediatric Ambulatory Surgical Programs. The Pediatric Surgical, Plastic Surgery & Burn Clinics are part of the McMaster Children's Hospital Pediatric Ambulatory Clinics providing acute tertiary and sub-specialty care to children age 0-17. This is a dynamic, fast-paced clinic where care is provided to children in a family-centred environment.


As a member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team in pediatric surgery, the Occupational Therapist will apply their clinical knowledge of musculoskeletal, nerve, and skin conditions to provide assessment and treatment to children ages 0-17. The Occupational Therapist will work within a range of surgical services but will focus heavily on brachial plexus injury. They will work with the multidisciplinary team to assess, treat, and educate patients and families about brachial plexus injury and follow-up. 


Qualifications
  • Current registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario
  • Minimum two (2) years of recent pediatric Occupational Therapy experience with involvement in the care of children with musculoskeletal conditions in both an inpatient and outpatient setting.
  • Recent Pediatric experience in the healthcare setting
  • Demonstrated experience in the assessment, evaluation and treatment of pediatric surgical patients and pediatric patients with congenital upper extremity anomalies and acute hand injuries.
  • Experience working with brachial plexus injuries is an asset
  • Experience in the fabrication of thermoplastic splints to treat traumatic hand injuries, congenital upper extremity anomalies and burns.
  • Experience in applying braces, splints, and other devices
  • Experience with pediatric feeding and swallowing assessment and treatment preferred.
  • Assessment and fitting of compression garments for hypertrophic scarring would be an asset.
  • Well-developed knowledge of the role of occupational therapy services, and other disciplines along the continuum of care
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant community services and children’s treatment facilities
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and non-verbal), critical thinking, mentoring, coaching and working within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated facilitation, coordination, independent assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation skills
  • Experience in rehabilitation therapy
  • Evidence of ability to facilitate change, foster innovation and model the values of the organization
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Self-directed and flexible practitioner with well-developed critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage a caseload of patients to ensure optimal patient care and access to service.
