As a member of the interdisciplinary health care team, the OTA/PTA will assist the Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists on the units in the provision of patient care, in both individual and group formats, in order to meet the varied needs of the patients and their families. They will provide education to patients and families as required. The OTA/PTA will practice under the guidance and direction of a qualified OT/PT. In addition, some equipment maintenance and procurement, organizational duties and documentation are required. The PTA/OTA may have the opportunity to serve as a preceptor for PTA/OTA students from accredited community colleges. The OTA/PTA functions according to the job description for OTA/PTA within the program 


Qualifications

·         Post-secondary diploma from an accredited community college in a Physiotherapist (PT) and Occupational Therapist (OT) Assistant Program

·         Recent experience (within the past 2 years) working in an acute medicine setting

·          Demonstrated effective communication skills, both written and verbal

·         Demonstrated understanding of the scope of practice of an OTA/PTA 5. Ability to function independently, follow established guidelines, and follow instructions from a PT or OT 

·         Ability to function collaboratively as an integral member of the healthcare team in a dynamic and fast-paced environment

·         Demonstrated knowledge of adaptive equipment and wheelchairs, safe ambulation and transfer techniques, mobility aids, therapeutic exercise, a variety of OT and PT treatment modalities, self-care strategies to maintain/improve functional independence

·         Demonstrated creativity, organizational and problem-solving skills; ability to work independently within assigned caseload

·         Demonstrated attributes of respect and caring

·         Demonstrated importance of patient and family-centered care approach to practice

·         Evidence of continuous learning
