Physician Assistant

While working with a team of health professionals in an inter-professional collaborative primary care setting and under the supervision of a physician, the Physician Assistant role will include but not be limited to:
 
 Conducting patient interviews and taking medical histories
 Performing physical examinations and interpret findings
 Performing certain acts under medical directives delegated to you by a physician
 Counselling patients on preventive healthcare
 Organizing follow-up
 Performing other duties within your competencies as a physician assistant.

All acts are conducted under the direction and supervision of a registered Physician, and in accordance with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario’s policy on delegation.

Collaborating with interdisciplinary team members, and using a patient-centered model of care, the Physician Assistant is responsible to provide direct patient care, including appropriate health prevention services, wellness programs, and coordination of related community and other resources for the primary care patient population. The role also tutors, mentors, and supervises family medicine residents and other health professional students as appropriate, participates in continuing education activities to integrate the role of the Physician Assistant in primary care and academic settings; initiate, participate, and/or lead programs, presentations, publications, evaluations and other system changes to continue the enhancement of interdisciplinary primary care teams.


Qualifications

1. Certified or eligible to be certified through the Physician Assistant’s Certification Council (PACC) or National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
 2. Membership with the Canadian Association of the Physician Assistants
 3. Experience in a primary care setting including knowledge and proficiency in current evidence- based methods and practices of primary care delivery with emphasis on health promotion, prevention and education and relevant social determinants of health is preferred
 4. Demonstrated competence in primary care assessment, triage and treatment skills, including experience with patients across the lifespan and in particular with children and prenatal patients
 5. Proven experience leading a project, program and/or team
 6. Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills
 7. Competence with computers skills including Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point and electronic medical records, OSCAR experience preferred
 8. Demonstrates critical thinking, decision making and analysis skills with regards to primary care assessments and developing appropriate health plans
 9. Demonstrates ongoing personal professional education and development consistent with primary care practice, new and emerging issues, the changing needs of patient populations and research
 10. Experience supervising, mentoring, orienting, observational and teaching opportunities to students and medical residents, ensuring that learning goals and objectives are met
