ASSISTANT CARETAKER

$23.65 per hour

As a Casual Assistant Caretaker, you will work on call in short-term and long-term assignments at multiple schools throughout the diverse communities of Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board including Hamilton Mountain, Hamilton Downtown, Waterdown, Flamborough, Dundas, Ancaster, Mount Hope, Binbrook, Stoney Creek and Winona. You will be expected to perform regular cleaning duties, maintain security of school facilities, and assist Head Caretaker/Caretaker with minor maintenance and repairs when required.

New Casual Assistant Caretakers are provided with paid training and will perform the following duties:

Dusting and sanitizing surfaces in classrooms and offices. Clean washrooms, floors, walls, fixtures, windows, chalkboards, vacuum carpets, etc. Perform cleaning duties using ladders (dusting, adjusting drapes, blinds, changing lights or ballasts etc.).

Wet and dry mopping of floors, polishing and scrubbing floors, operating auto scrubbers and buffers, stripping and refinishing floor surfaces.

Secure building: lock doors and windows, set alarm systems, turn out lights.

Garbage collection and removal, inside and outside.

Snow removal, salting, and sanding as required.

Operation of equipment including vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, auto scrubbers, snow blowers, riding lawn mowers.

Assist with set-up requirements for school activities and community rentals. Move and set up furniture and equipment - desks, chairs, cafeteria tables classroom equipment, etc.

Maintain all logs in absence of Head Caretaker/Caretaker. Inform Head Caretaker/Caretaker re: repairs, maintenance and vandalism.

Ensure compliance with WHMIS regulations (request required safety equipment).

Performing minor maintenance duties, eg. changing lights, plumbing (if qualified).

Qualifications, Skills & Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Previous private or commercial/industrial cleaning experience.

Able to read, speak, and comprehend basic English.

Basic computer skills.

Ability to perform physical duties-lifting heavy objects, bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, climbing, gripping, pounding, etc.

Comfortable and able to work alone in buildings, including at night.

Ability to travel to different schools throughout the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board.

Additional Qualifications

A satisfactory vulnerable sector records check (dated within 6 months of offer date) will be required before beginning this position. Purchased at employee's expense.

A condition of employment requires that you pass the Board’s physical testing component. Additional information will be provided if selected for interview.

Interviews & Key Dates

1. The posting will close on November 3, 2024 .

2. Interviews will take place in person (20 Education Court) on November 15 & 20th .

Note: For safety reasons, basic English reading and speaking skills are needed to perform the role. There will be a language proficiency portion to the interview consisting of a reading comprehension and speaking evaluation.

3. If successful in your interview, you will be scheduled for physical testing at Lifemark(210 Mohawk Road East, Unit #3)beginning the week of November 18th.

4. Pending successful physical testing, and references checks, onboarding orientation will begin the week of January 20th, 2025.
