Job Description: 

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY: The Cancer Registrar II is responsible for the abstracting, interpreting, coding and staging of cancer incidence, mortality and related cancer data including patient registration, examination, diagnosis, and treatment information. The Cancer Registrar II reports to the Manager of Cancer Registry.

QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Diploma in Health Information Management

Experience: Nine (9) months of cancer registry coding experience within the last three (3) years; OR If no such applicant found, six (6) months cancer registry coding experience within the last three (3) years; OR If no such applicant found, one (1) year of experience as a Health Information Practitioner (HIP) 

Membership: Active Membership with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA)

Skills: 

Demonstrated medical knowledge and ability to critically analyze coding problems and cases.

Competent in use of a variety of software.

Ability to interpret detailed information and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Moderate judgment and problem solving skills are required to select the most appropriate action from a variety of alternatives.

Human relations skills required to empathize with complaints and/or concerns and establish rapport with patients, the public and other staff.

Accuracy of fine motor movements required for typing and sorting charts.

Ability to coordinate and periodically assume responsibility for work over others.

Maintain confidentiality.

Demonstrates commitment to continuing professional development.

Knowledge of culturally responsive care for First Nations and Métis people.
