Job Description: The Quality Assurance coordinator provides supervision for all quality activities provided by the SHA Organ and Tissue Donation Program. This includes, but not limited to donor identification, screening, retrieval, storage, processing and distribution and ensuring regulatory compliance with Health Canada Regulations (HCR) Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) Standards, Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Standards.
The Quality Assurance coordinator will be responsible for providing fundamental improvements to evidence based clinical practices and activities thereby enhancing overall quality performance.
The position is also responsible for staff education, clinical skills development training and evaluation for SHA Donation program staff.
The Quality Assurance coordinator shall be part of for each quality review. The QA is a designated individual who is familiar with but has not performed the specific work being reviewed.
Human Resources Exemption: No
Experience:
- A minimum of 2 years critical care nursing experience with demonstrated clinical competence Or equivalent education and experience as Undergraduate degree or diploma in a health, science or quality management.
- Minimum 1-2 years’ experience required in donor screening, obtaining consent for organ and/or tissue donation, interviewing and counseling families of recently deceased potential organ and/or tissue donors and living donors.
- Minimum 1-2 years’ experience required in working with coroners, police departments, morgue personnel, healthcare personnel, funeral homes, other health care organizations, etc.
- Minimum 1-2 years’ experience in coordinating retrieval processes for other Procurement Agencies involved with multiple tissue donor situations. This includes obtaining consent, Medical-social screening, Physical examinations, and risk assessment.
- Experience with responsibility to the safety of organs and tissues for transplantation in accordance with HCR, CSA, and Standards of Practice for the Safety of Cells, Tissues, and Organs,.
- Experience in the maintenance and implementation of departmental, national, and international standards for safety of organs and tissues for transplantation as set forth by the SHA donation program, EBAA, Health Canada (HC) and CSA.
- Experience in SOP establishment, development, implementation, and maintenance and amendments of the SHA donation program SOP’s in accordance with HC Regulations CSA and EBAA Medical Standards.
- Experience in the identification, investigating and reporting of errors, accidents and adverse reactions in accordance with Health Canada Regulations, CSA and EBAA Medical Standards within the required timelines for each regulatory body
- Experience with product and/or tissue or organ recall and discordant tests results as per HC, EBAA.
Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)
Other Education and Training:
- Nursing diploma is acceptable
- Certified Eye Bank Technician (CEBT) through EBAA is preferred or commitment to obtain the certification within 2 years of hire.
Competencies:
- Knowledgeable and competent in aseptic technique.
- Be able to perform and ensure accurate documentation of all steps of donation; processing, preservation, storage, distribution and transportation of organs and/or tissue for transplantation in accordance with departmental Provincial, Federal, EBAA, HC and CSA.
- Be able to assess donor suitability/eligibility as per EBAA, CSA Standards and HCR.
- Be able to coordinate the staffing for the SHA Donation program that includes on call staffing also.
- Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills and able to work within multidisciplinary team setting.
- Demonstrated management qualities and effective counselling skills
- High regard for confidentiality and advocacy for tissue and organ donation.
- Demonstrated effective teaching skills in formal and informal setting.
- Physically able to perform assigned duties and be able to work on short notice as required. Good previous attendance and work record.
- Demonstrated computer skills (MS word, PowerPoint, and Excel).

- Valid Saskatchewan license and access to own transportation.
- Registered/eligible with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS)
