Job Description: 

This senior position reports directly to the Area Department Lead of Laboratory Medicine for Regina, Saskatchewan. The Area Lead for Newborn Metabolic Screening serves as a consultant for the biochemical/metabolic Newborn Screening service, directs day-to-day operations, and provides administrative and technical oversight for the biochemical aspects of the provincial Newborn Screening Program.

Education: 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, or eligibility for a Canadian work visa.
  • A medical or doctoral degree from an accredited institution.
  • Board Certifications or eligibility:
    • Preferred: board certification from the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists, with specialization in Laboratory Biochemical Genetics.
      • Candidates with ABMGG certification in Clinical Biochemical Genetics are also welcome to apply.
  • At least two years working in an accredited healthcare laboratory setting. Work during residency or fellowship may be counted toward this time

    Candidates with other relevant combinations of education, healthcare experience, and board certification/eligibility are welcome to apply on a case-by-case basis.

    Special attention will be given to candidates with strong interest or experience in newborn screening, public health, high-complexity laboratory testing, and/or biochemical genetics, as well as those with leadership or executive experience in the healthcare setting.

Competencies:

  • Develop, oversee, and review current biochemical newborn screening in accordance with Canadian standards of practice.
  • Review current population demographics; update screening targets and tests based on current guidelines and population trends.
  • Provide technical guidance and oversight of validation and implementation of expanded testing.
  • Collaborate with provincial and federal agencies to optimize testing for the province of Saskatchewan.  
  • Serve as a technical consultant for provincial biochemical NBS services, including maintenance of certification and ongoing continuing medical education for both  leadership  and bench staff.
  • Engage with provincial and federal colleagues in research, advocacy, and evidence-based decision-making in the setting of newborn screening.
  • Analyze current pre- and post-analytic trends and work within current logistical structures to optimize provincial delivery of the NBS service.
  • Review and maintain high-quality laboratory services, including (but not restricted to) ongoing review of equipment, personnel, documentation, and internal and external quality assessment programs and continuous quality improvement
