Job Description:
Technical Assistant is responsible for pre-analytical functions including specimen procurement, pre-analytical specimen handling and distribution and for entering necessary data into the Laboratory Information System. The Technical Assistant will also perform physical measurements for participants.
QUALIFICATIONS: Medical Laboratory Assistant - Applied Certificate
Experience: Experience in biological or medical laboratory is an asset, Experience with data collection and database management is an asset.
Skills:
Ability to perform Phlebotomy with a less than six percent miss rate
Accuracy of fine motor movements for typing/data entry is required.
Knowledge of biological waste products and specimen and chemical disposal.
Knowledge in blood composition and characteristicsKnowledge in laboratory health and safety
Skills in aseptic techniques
Skills in pipetting and handling microliter-level samples
Some Judgment and problem solving skills are required to select the most appropriate action from a limited number of alternatives.
Ability to effectively communicate factual information both orally and in writing.
Human relations skills required to empathize with complaints and/or concerns and establish rapport with patients, the public and other staff.
Ability to make decisions in accordance with agency policies and procedures and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Strong ability in time management, attention to detail, multi-tasking, flexibility and initiative
Ability to work independently
Ability to follow detailed protocols with minimal supervisionIntermedium general computer skills and abilities to learn using new software
Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Office programs especially Excel
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Ability to safeguard confidentiality
Knowledge of culturally responsive care for First Nations and Métis people.
