We are currently looking for Temporary Full-Time Graduate Nursing Student Externs  (up to 5 )  to be a part of our 6 West Critical Care program.

 

The Graduate Nursing Students Extern role is an unregulated healthcare worker providing direct personal support to HRH patients. Graduate Nursing Student Externs will be responsible for the provision and documentation of basic care for patients, and shall work under the supervision of regulated healthcare providers in accordance to department policies and procedures. They shall not perform or be delegated any regulated acts (medication administration, vital signs, assessments, etc.).

Employees hired into this position will be required to obtain their Nursing registration within the time frame outlined in provincial specific regulations.

 

Reporting Relationship: Manager 6, West Critical Care

Schedule Requirements: Rotating shifts, 8 or 12 hours, days/evenings/nights/weekends

Location: Humber River Hospital - Wilson Site

Employee Group: Non-Union

 

Responsibilities:

 

Under the supervision of the Primary Nurse or a regulated healthcare professional:

  • Responsible for the provision of basic care (activities of daily living such as bathing, toileting, feeding, etc.) needs for up to 10 patients each.
  • Responsible for the documentation of activities of daily living (ADLs), such as intake and output, and relevant communication for patients in which they have provided care for.
  • Participates in patient assessments
  • Assists regulated health professionals in routine monitoring (hourly rounding) of assigned patients
  • Receives report from assigned patients’ Primary Nurse, including any patient specific behaviours or issues to observe and report on.
  • Identifies and communicates with the inter-professional healthcare team members on patient issues for ongoing patient assignments as necessary, immediately report any clinical concerns to their direct supervisor.
  • Routinely meets with regulated health professional and / or inter-professional healthcare team as necessary to discuss patient status, safety issues and relevant patient or family information
  • Collaborates to develop and refine competency in understanding the development and management of patient care planning in preparation for transitioning into temporary registered position.
  • Participates in all required staff meetings as scheduled
  • Assists unit Clinical Practice Leader in the collection and identification of practice needs / gaps to develop educational strategies, plans or content, in consultation with the unit leadership team and clinical staff
  • Assists unit Clinical Practice Leader in the development and evaluation of formal and informal educational programs and materials
  • Supports and facilitates activities related to Best Practice Spotlight Organization in collaboration with unit CPL, manager and BPSO coordinator.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Nursing student in completion of their final year of study in a College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) approved Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) program ,prior to obtaining CNO registration
  • Current CPR Certification
  • Pre-graduation in the Critical Care Unit preferred
  • Ability to provide basic assistive care with frequent supervision and ongoing mentoring from a Registered Nurse. 
  • Ability in assessing difficult situations and using good judgement
  • Ability to accurately and effectively communicate with the inter-professional healthcare team members
  • Excellent customer service skills; strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to use good judgment in assessing difficult situations
  • Must be a team player (works well with others)
  • Demonstrates understanding of the use of technology
  • Mandatory compliance with HRH training- Privacy & Confidentiality requirements, WHMIS, Fire & Safety, hand hygiene modules
  • Good work attendance
