CLINICAL EXTERN - OT/PT/RT/Paramedic/Nursing
This externship is an exciting employment opportunity for students currently enrolled in a recognized OT, PT, RT, Paramedic or Nursing program, to contribute their knowledge and skills in a hospital care environment supporting the communities we serve.
Clinical Externs will be working in their capacity as an unregulated care provider (UCP). Successful candidates will gain valuable patient care experience and build connections with a team of passionate inter-professional care providers in a hospital setting. Clinical Externs may be considered for employment opportunities upon graduation and licensure.
POSITION TITLE: Clinical Extern - OT/PT/RT/Paramedic/Nursing
SITE: Clinical Externs will be placed at one or more of the four sites of the HPHA. Please indicate in the screening questions your site preference in order. Externs will be assigned a “home site”, with the opportunity to float between sites to broaden their clinical experiences.

STATUS: Temporary Full-Time & Temporary Part-Time x30
SHIFTS: 12-hour shifts
Availability: Required for Days and Nights including Weekends and Stat Holidays
REPORTS TO: Manager, Nursing Practice
DATE REQUIRED: May 1, 2025 with an option to work reading week and Christmas Break
SALARY: $20.60 per hour
VACATION: Successful candidates will have the option to request for unpaid time off up to two weeks during the temporary full-time term.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- OT, PT, RT (1st, 2nd or 3rd year), Paramedic (PCP 2nd year or ACP), RN (2nd, 3rd, or 4th year), or RPN (2nd year) students enrolled in an accredited and recognized program.
- Current certificate in Basic Life Support or willingness to obtain upon hire
*The successful applicants must provide proof of enrollment in the appropriate education program to qualify.
DUTIES INCLUDE (but are not limited to):
- Practices using acquired knowledge, skills and judgment needed to perform all actions/duties.
- Follows organizational policies and professional standards.
- Understands personal and role limitations when accepting delegation from registered health professionals.
- Provides assistance with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting and ambulating.
- Supports patients within capacity of UCP including ADL’s and other duties as assigned.
- Contributes to the daily restocking of supplies and products
- Requests assistance with assigned duties whenever necessary.
- Provides measures to ensure skin integrity and reduce pressure injuries.
- Assists with comfort measures and patient safety by ensuring the environment is clean and tidy and free of hazards.
- Accurate documentation of all patient care and treatments provided.
- Provides transfer of accountability at shift report and when going on break.
- Contributes to and supports positive team functioning.
- Contributes to organizational initiatives, including process improvement projects.
- Other duties as assigned by designation.
