POSITION: TEAM LEADER, Operating Room

POSITION SUMMARY: The Team Leader is a Registered Nurse who plays a key role as a member of the inter-professional team. Using the Collaborative Care Model and evidence-based practice and ORNAC Standards, they will assist in a team approach with the coordination and supervision of care to patients and their families (the Operating Room encompasses endoscopy). Comprehension of the CNO Practice Standard: Scope of Practice, outlining nursing accountabilities under the three concepts of authority, competence, and context in relation to the Operating Room. The OR Team Leader and PACU Team Leader work closely and assume a leadership role in patient flow across the perioperative period. The Team Leader will also work closely with Medical Device and Reprocessing Department (MDRD) and Materials Management (MM) staff.
REPORTS TO: Manager, Surgical Services
DATE REQUIRED: As soon as possible
SALARY: $43.19 to 60.12 per hour
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
- BScN or in process with an identified completion date preferred
- Successful completion of a recognized OR Certificate course from an approved educational institution or equivalent with successful completion of the course within 12 months
- Current BLS required
- Current ACLS preferred
- CPNC(C) preferred
- Knowledge of ORNAC standards of practice
- Successful completion of process optimization education
- Recent/related courses, in-services in peri-operative nursing and leadership
Experience:
- Minimum five years nursing experience in a healthcare setting
- Recent clinical experience (minimum two years) in peri-operative nursing required
- Recent leadership experience in a healthcare or related setting
Skills/Abilities:
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with Medical and Clinical Program Directors, management team and other front-line leaders
- Demonstrated leadership and coordination skills in a fast-paced, complex environment
- Demonstrated effective time management skills
- Demonstrated commitment to safety - patient, worker and workplace. The successful applicant will demonstrate good stewardship in the identification, reporting and mitigation of unsafe acts or conditions
- Demonstrated ability to provide analysis of program-specific metrics
- Demonstrated ability to lead process improvement initiatives
- Demonstrated excellence in the ability to initiate, model and support change in a constructive manner
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and continuing education
- Demonstrated awareness of documentation processes and standards related to pre/intra/post-operative care
- Demonstrated clinical competence in the area of peri-operative nursing
- Demonstrated commitment to HPHA’s Vision, Mission, Values, Priorities, Commitment to Community and Accountability Framework
- Ability to prepare equipment and supplies for surgical procedures and supports surgical procedures
- Ability to participate in the evaluation and selection of new/replacement technology required in perioperative services
- Ability to ensure OR equipment is functional and in good repair - implements processes for repair/replacement as required
- Demonstrated excellence in communication - (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills in dealing with patients, families and healthcare providers
- Knowledge of Senior Friendly Hospital initiatives and their application in the clinical setting
- Demonstrated strong customer service and patient/family-centred skills
- Demonstrated ability to deal with crisis/conflicts and implement resolution strategies
- Skilled to perform, coach and mentor staff in program-specific skills related to peri-operative nursing
- Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, problem-solve, oversee and support the activities of self and unit staff
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) with an ability to comprehend software programs such as Meditech, and Novari
- Demonstrated commitment to punctuality and regular attendance
