Position Status: Full-time

Location: Blueberry River First Nations in northeast British Columbia

Reports to: Band Manager

BRFN is a First Nations that has successfully litigated in the protection of Treaty 8 Rights and successfully executed an Implementation Agreement with the Province of British Columbia.

Summary of the Position

The Education Manger is responsible for administering and assisting in fulfilling the general and specific aspects of education of BRFN students. The Education Manager will implement and encourage learning styles which often include observation, imitation, use of narrative/storytelling, collaboration, and cooperation, as seen among First Nations. This is a hands-on approach that emphasizes direct experience and learning through inclusion. Contributes to strategic initiatives of BRFN and annual reporting and regular reporting, advising CEO, Chief and Council on progress, recommends actions to address current and emerging issues in Indigenous education and school management and operations.

Responsibilities and Duties

Learning ultimately supports the well-being of the self, the family, the community, the land, the spirits, and the ancestors.

Learning is holistic, reflexive, reflective, experiential, and relational (focused on connectedness, on reciprocal relationships, and a sense of place).

To include respect for elders and those in position of authority.

To develop intellectual skills.

To acquire specific vocational training and to develop a healthy attitude towards growth and development.

Provides leadership in the development, implementation, review and refinement of accountable educational programs and services strategic plan.

Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of education policies, standards, programs and plans as they pertain to curriculum, assessment etc., partakes in various council and committee meetings in support of Indigenous educational goals and objectives.

Works to ensure on-going evaluation and continuous improvement in providing the best possible learning environment for Indigenous students in BRFN.

Develops and implements work priorities and performance objectives.

Supports and advises on Indigenous curriculum, instructional practices and student assessment programs in schools and participates in program evaluations to determine effectiveness, identify gaps and/or critical areas that may require modifications.

Monitors program and service performance indicators to effectively evaluate program and service delivery. Modifies and enhances services to ensure responsiveness to BRFN student needs, increasing success and graduation rates.

Responsible to oversee for the education needs for on reserve students and off reserve students within the local school district, and post-secondary of registered BRFN members.

All other duties, as required.

Qualifications and Skills

Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in the Field of Education

Valid Child Safe Certificate or willingness to obtain prior to starting work.

Ability to pass a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector checks before commencement of work.

Knowledge of BRFN community including history, traditions and culture is an asset.

Work as part of a team and successfully interact with a variety of personality types.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Maintains high level of confidentiality in the handling of information.

Able to maintain confidentiality

Valid BC Driver’s License, ability and willingness to travel to remote areas and travel to meetings outside of the region as required;
