You are a Senior Contracts Specialist who will manage all contract and engagement activities with clients and subcontractors. You will be reviewing, negotiating, drafting, and interpreting agreements and related tasks to identify and mitigate business and contract risks.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Ensure proper handling of contracts, support documentation, bid scopes for subcontractors and related files
  • Identify and discuss contracting and commercial risks with managers and recommend alternative or additional bid or contract wording to mitigate, contain and/or transfer risk exposures
  • Provide project teams with an understanding of the relevant aspects of the construction agreements
  • Working with the project team, review and evaluate change notices, change directives, amending agreements and potential claims, including coordinating and ensuring consistency of approach and paperwork throughout the project
  • Address and resolve contractual issues as they arise including ascertaining the cost and schedule impact associated with the contractual issue, including claims for extension of time, loss and preparation of financial claims
  • Participate in the resolution of client, and subcontractor claims and disputes
  • Apply dispute resolution techniques to complex contractual claims and apply extensive knowledge and experience to guide the teams during the claims and dispute resolution processes
  • Ensure all documentation including all standard agreement templates are completed with each subcontractor
  • Review and track subcontractor onboarding documents, including insurance documentation, performance bonds, labor and material bonds, to ensure they are complete and meet the contractual requirements. Monitor their documentation to ensure that they do not expire while the subcontractor is still working on the project
  • Engage with and provide stewardship to project teams involved in the negotiations, the formation and administration of the Prime Contract, sub-contracts and purchasing process
  • Review amending agreements and change orders to ensure flow down of Prime Contract terms, scope of work and pricing are reasonable
  • Working with project controls teams to ensure contract values are within allocated budgets and prepare budget analyses for management to highlight any over/underruns and flag potential risks
  • Work in a highly demanding environment in a fast paced atmosphere building lasting engineering infrastructure

Qualifications

  • Completion of post-secondary education with a diploma or degree related to Construction Management, Engineering, Legal and or related education
  • 10+ years of related experience in British Columbia or other Canadian jurisdictions on civil engineering projects
  • Knowledge of construction risks and how they pertain to construction contracts
  • Understanding of subcontractor contract resolution processes
  • Experience with negotiating and resolving contractual risks and recommending mitigation practices
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Knowledge of contract terminology, practices and concepts
