Job Overview: Manage the Loblaw Real Estate (LRE) and Loblaw Energy and Facilities (LEaF) Health & Safety Programs across Canada, while influencing a safety-oriented approach to your work. As the Senior Manager Construction Health and Safety, you will be responsible for overseeing Contractor management, Construction safety and Refrigeration safety (installation/ repair/ maintenance). You will work directly with our regional leads, business partners, colleagues, and contractors, functioning as a subject matter expert and liaison with official bodies for health & safety.

Responsibilities:

Loblaw Real Estate (LRE)

  • Ensure consistent application of the national Contractor Health and Safety Management System (CHSMS) across the Loblaw and Shoppers Drug Mart Business, which includes but is not limited to:
  • Managing the third-party health and safety accreditation program for contractors and ensuring this process is embedded in all Construction Tenders.
  • Pre-Construction Safety Kick-offs on all capital projects
  • Monitoring Contractors on project sites and ensure periodic health and safety inspections are carried out and addressed accordingly.
  • Effectively communicating with contractors, LRE representatives and applicable governing bodies to ensure the team is working without any disruption to the set construction schedule.
  • Ensuring that areas of concern and/or liability are promptly brought to the attention of LRE Senior Management
  • As required, prepare reports to the Sr. Director Health and Safety and LRE’s Senior Management team, summarizing construction safety and actions taken to reduce liability.
  • Update and maintain policies & procedures, ensuring legislative amendments are incorporated and effectively communicated to all applicable parties.
  • As required, and in conjunction with legal, review and revise standard Construction Contracts, Purchase Order Terms and Conditions, and Tender Documents, ensuring the required safety language is embedded to manage risks and potential liabilities.

Loblaw Energy and Facilities (LEaF)

  • Provide direction and support for entire Safety Management System, including reaffirming safety standards, involvement in field activities, training programs, and operationalization.
  • Responsible for the development, implementation, and sustainment of occupational health and safety programs, standards, and training initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with provincial legislation, as well as federal regulations driven by internal and third-party audits, inspections, and investigations.
  • Conduct or participate in area assessments, inspections, observations, reviews, data analysis and assist in the completion of corrective actions as required.
  • Support and reinforce incident management process including reporting, investigation, committee reviews, monitoring corrective actions and lessons learned communication.
  • As required, and in conjunction with legal, review and revise Third-Party Master Service Agreements, to reflect the required insurance requirements, prequalification process, and occupational health and safety language

Training

  • Ensure applicable training is provided to the LRE Store Development and Construction team and LEaF Operational teams.
  • Develop and implement training courses/ seminars as needed to update the teams on changes due to amendments to related legislation as well as updates to health and safety programs/ policies.
  • Facilitate area-specific training on workplace safety measures where/ when required.
  • Ensure training records are maintained, up to date and readily available for review.

Professional Competencies:

  • NCSO or CRSP designation preferred
  • Minimum 5+ years of health & safety experience within the construction industry is preferred. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  • Comprehensive understanding and interpretation of Occupational Health and Safety Legislation across Canada, with an in-depth knowledge of Construction.
  • Ability to manage inherent risks with being an Owner in Construction Projects
  • Grocery retail, distribution/ warehouse, and refrigeration experience is a definite asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including teamwork, issue resolution, negotiation, and customer relationship management.
  • Experienced in developing and maintaining positive supportive relationships with various levels of operational stakeholders.
  • Strong organization, time management, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively motivate others.
  • Travel required
