Reporting to the Executive Manager, People and Culture, this role provides advice, guidance and leadership to all levels of the organization with the objective of ensuring legislative and contractual compliance, minimizing the risk of occupational injuries and/or illnesses and championing a health and safety culture. The successful candidate will develop, implement, and maintain health and safety programs; lead initiatives to recognize and reduce identified risks; and ensure compliance with governmental health and safety, and other regulatory requirements.

The successful candidate will be instrumental in promoting a health and safety culture within a diverse multi-union environment and will coordinate health and safety initiatives and training for all Board employees. They will manage and administer employee WSIB claims, including facilitating safe return-to-work and accident prevent assessments.

Qualifications and Skills required:

Post-Secondary degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field/discipline,

Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) designation is preferred

Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience, in health and safety and WSIB claims management, preferably in a multi-unionized environment with experience in the education sector

Solid understanding and sound working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act and related codes and legislation

Direct staff supervisory experience is preferred, along with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team

Strong research, analytical, problem-solving, strategic thinking, planning, organizational and conflict resolution skills

Comprehensive knowledge of collective agreements, human resources practices, Board policies and procedures would be an asset

Superior interpersonal and communication skills along with proven experience building collaborative working relationships and providing exemplary customer service to a diverse group of stakeholders

High degree of discretion in working with confidential and sensitive personal information

Knowledge and understanding of the complex and reciprocal connections among different elements of the Board’s organization and the role of Health and Safety in supporting the delivery of exemplary programs and services

Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation as extensive travel throughout the Board’s jurisdiction is required
