Risk Management Specialist

Reporting to the Manager, Enterprise Risk this role will support the growth of the enterprise risk management program. This role is responsible for providing leadership and expertise in risk management while enabling and supporting a proactive, integrated and just culture approach. This role is also responsible for the collection, preparation and generation of risk and safety information both internal and external to the organization. This includes consulting, incident reporting, complaints and claims management. This position coordinates the centralized occurrence reporting system. The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying, assessing, and managing potential risks associated with patient care, including clinical, operational, and financial risks. The Risk Specialist will work closely with clinical teams, administrators, and other stakeholders to develop and implement risk mitigation strategies and monitor compliance with policies and procedures. This role may perform additional duties as required.

Contribute to safe, quality care by

  • Identify, assess, and prioritize risks associated with patient care, including clinical, operational, and financial risks.
  • Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies in collaboration with clinical teams, administrators, and other stakeholders.
  • Monitor compliance with policies and procedures related to risk management and quality improvement.
  • Investigate and analyze adverse events and incidents, including root cause analysis and development of corrective action plans.
  • Provide education and training to clinical teams and staff on risk management and quality improvement principles and practices.
  • Collaborate with legal and compliance teams to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and standards of care.
  • Participate in internal and external audits and assessments related to risk management and quality improvement.
  • Develop and maintain effective communication channels with clinical teams, administrators, and other stakeholders to promote a culture of safety and risk management.
  • Stay current with industry trends and best practices related to risk management and quality improvement.

What must you have?

  • University or Undergraduate degree in a healthcare discipline or relevant experience.
  • Three to five years’ hospital experience (clinical experience preferred).
  • Experience with root cause analysis (RCA), risk assessment, failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and development of corrective action plans
  • Three to five years’ experience working in a Risk Management, Quality and Patient Safety role an asset.
  • Risk Management Certificate an asset

  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and standards of care related to healthcare risk management and quality improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to think analytically and at a systemic level.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with clinical teams, administrators, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and strategically.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Visio.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft SharePoint an asset.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage tasks accordingly.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven attendance record.
