POSITION SUMMARY:
The person in this position will be responsible for Canadian and consolidated quarterly tax reporting under IFRS, reviewing tax provisions of global sites, Canadian tax compliance including Forms T2, T106, T1134 and NR4, maintaining international schedules including surplus, adjusted cost basis, and upstream loans, managing CRA and provincial tax audits, and assisting with Canadian tax planning activities. This person will report to and work closely with the Global Taxation Director for Mattr with respect to all Canadian, international tax planning, and M&A matters with the goal of mitigating tax exposures while reducing the overall effective tax rate of the company.

 

DUTIES:

A.    Canada Tax Compliance and Reporting 
•    Lead Canada tax compliance efforts, including managing outsourcing of the Federal and Provincial income tax returns for all Canadian resident entities (as well as filing of NR4, T1134, T106). Identify opportunities\strategies for tax minimization while maintaining Mattr’s conservative principals.
•    Prepare and manage Federal and Provincial estimated tax payments.
•    Track earned surplus and tax pools for tax credit and gross-up for repatriated earnings and capital.
•    Track tax basis following contribution and return of capital.
•    Respond to payroll, GST/HST and property tax questions as necessary.
•    Keep abreast of tax law changes, identifying areas of impact and assisting in ensuring compliance with tax law changes.
•    Manage any Federal and Provincial tax audits.

 

B.    Financial Reporting for Income Tax
•    Prepare quarterly and year-end tax provisions for operations and interests in Canada and assigned foreign jurisdictions. Review and analyze relevant financial information and complete schedules in compliance with company policy and applicable Financial Accounting Standards (IFRS).
•    Prepare or assist with global corporate tax rate reconciliation, deferred tax inventory and continuity, income tax payable/receivable continuity, and financial statement tax note.
•    Update and reconcile reserve analysis to tax exposure analysis.
•    Provide schedules and manage the requests/responses from/to financial statement auditors during quarterly and year-end reviews.

 

C.    New Business, M&A, Divestiture and Tax structuring
•    Assist the Director of Tax with research and provide timely Canadian tax analysis on structures for projects and operations including analysis of relevant Canada tax treatment were applicable.
•    Assist the Director of Tax with advice for financing of projects, sourcing of funds, intercompany financing, interest rate implications, repatriation of funds, foreign currency conversions and foreign currency hedging strategies with respect to new projects and existing operations in the assigned area and/or on a priority basis.


D.    Transfer Pricing
•    Monitor key transfer pricing margins and cost allocations to ensure congruence with transfer pricing policies and strategies.
•    Monitor and prepare Corporate Administrative charge allocations to ensure congruence with transfer pricing policies and strategies.
•    Co-ordinate, monitor and assist with the update of contemporaneous transfer pricing documentation for reports under a centralized transfer pricing project.
•    Assist with preparation and filing of Mattr’s Country-by-Country Report with the CRA and other countries as needed.

 

E.    Other Responsibilities
•    Assist with HST/GST/PST and Federal and Provincial payroll tax notices as needed. 
•    Assisting with forecasting effective tax rates for the strategic business plan and quarterly forecasts.
•    Maintain Sharepoint based global tax compliance and transfer pricing reporting system for all complete filings.
•    Assist with internal audit and 52-109 testing as needed.  

 

REQUIREMENTS:
•    Minimum of 5 years Canadian Tax experience.
•    Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
•    Masters of Tax preferred.
•    Previous manufacturing experience preferred.
•    CPA, Completion of Level 1 and Level 2 of the CPA Institute Tax Indepth Courses is preferred.
•    Strong tax accounting (IFRS) background.
•    Strong technical tax background including sound knowledge of the Canadian tax system, including international.
•    Ability to manage a diverse workload and tight deadlines.
•    Ability to communicate complicated tax analysis in a concise manner to executive management.
