Occupational Health & Safety Officer

Full-time, year round , 12-month position

Start Date December 2024

Medicine Hat Public School Division requires the services of a skilled individual to fill the position of Occupational Health and Safety Officer. This position will involve working at a high level in a collaborative environment to maintain and develop strategies and programs that will continue to improve the health and safety for approximately 1000 employees and 7000 students at 20 sites.

Responsibilities :

Evaluate the workplace environment and assist with developing safety-management practices that identify and define the safety responsibilities of all employees.

Investigate incidents and take preventative action to rectify future hazards.

Manage WCB claims; ensuring timely completion of accident/injury reporting.

Maintain a highly visible presence within our Division.

Assist in the development and implementation of risk management policies and procedures.

Coordinate the accident and incident reporting system used by the Division.

Experience with implementation and maintenance of an emergency response plan.

Work closely with management to provide leadership and to develop and maintain a strong, positive safety culture.

Represent the School Division in a professional and ethical manner to maintain effective relationships with internal and external key stakeholders.

Implement and maintain changes as required by government legislation.

Maintain Occupational Health and Safety manuals and policies.

Lead and maintain safety training, site inspections, hazard assessments and standard operating procedures.

Provide backup for disability management when required.

Other administrative tasks as required.

Knowledge and Skills :

Extensive understanding and knowledge of provincial and federal health and safety legislation and regulations.

Excellent knowledge of data analysis and risk assessment.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel is required.

Outstanding attention to detail and observation ability.

Previous experience with Hour Zero would be an asset.

Must have excellent communication and organizational skills.

Detail and results oriented with the ability to multi-task, and work with deadlines.

Ability to work with minimal supervision in a team environment.

Ability to always maintain confidentiality and employee privacy during sensitive situations.

Requirements

Degree or Diploma in a field related to occupational health and safety.

Working towards or has safety certification (or equivalent experience) such as the Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) designation, or Certified Registered Safety Professional (CRSP).

Must provide own transportation.

Minimum of 2-3 years of related work experience.
