As a Developer on the Commodity Derivatives team at National Bank, you will join our Calgary based Commodity Sales and Trading desk which specializes in a broad range of physical and financial energy commodity derivatives in the cleared and Over-the-Counter (OTC) market. This job allows you to have a positive impact on the organization utilizing your highly quantitative and technical skillsets, combined with investigative and creative problem-solving ability.


Your Job

  • Continually update, modernize and improve the trading desk’s tech stack, which builds custom proprietary software solutions for our trading activities. This opportunity is centered in a fast-paced trading floor environment, where maintaining and optimizing accuracy, speed, and efficiency are of utmost importance
  • Develop a deep understanding of and maintain existing proprietary software systems
  • Apply new technologies to improve efficiencies and solve new business challenges
  • Learn to value complex financial derivatives in a highly competitive and fast paced environment
  • Research, develop and work with traders to implement models and analytical tools to support trading and risk management activities
  • Utilize your technical skillset to identify and optimize strategic opportunities
  • Develop, test and implement hedging strategies using commodity derivatives
  • Work collectively with other departments to ensure accurate reporting and data flow


Your Team

Within the Commodity Derivatives sector, you are a part of a team of National Bank colleagues, reporting to the Head of Trading. This highly technical individual will have the opportunity to get invaluable experience and immediately add value by working directly with developers and traders, focused on adapting technology to help manage trading portfolios and develop new business opportunities.

Our training programs use on-the-job learning to help you master your role. You’ll also have access to colleagues with a wide range of expertise, experience and backgrounds to enrich all aspects of your development. This role has the unique opportunity that has the potential to become a full-time position.

Temporary 6-month assignment, with possibility of full-time position.


Basic Requirements

  • Successfully completed bachelor’s/master’s in software engineering, computer science, data sciences, mathematics or relevant field
  • 1-3 years of relevant development experience with highly technical requirements would be a strong asset
  • Exceptional numerical, analytical and investigative aptitude
  • Experience with Python is required including Pandas and Numpy. Python visualizations such as plotly/Matplotlib would be beneficial
  • Database architecture and previous experience in SQL is required, with preference to Postgresql or MySQL
  • JavaScript, C++, Windows Batch Scripting and other programing languages would also be beneficial
  • Experience with large data sets, data analysis including data mining, statistical analysis and ML would be desired
  • Knowledge of economics/finance including financial derivatives products such as (futures, swaps, options and exotics) in addition to the corresponding risk metrics would also be desired
