Description
As autonomous primary health professionals, occupational therapists work in partnership with clients and relevant others to provide safe, effective, ethical, and client-centered occupational therapy. This position will help clients of all ages who have limited abilities establish, develop and/or maintain the ability to complete daily functions and tasks while focused on reducing slips, trips, and falls. As a member of a multidisciplinary team, the Occupational Therapist is to provide assessments, treatment recommendations, and community referrals to persons who have sustained a fall. These clients are identified through the 911 Niagara Ambulance Communication Center either at the time of the fall or through the Community Paramedicine Program. At Niagara Emergency Medical Services we do this with a people care focus using our STAR CARE principles.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
- Bachelors Degree in Occupational Therapy required, Masters degree preferred
- Current registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario
- Current certification in CPR (Basic Rescuer level)
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
- Ministry of Health Assistive Devices Program (ADP) authorizer preferred
- Over four years experience in a health or community setting
- Knowledge of local resources and referral pathways for continued health support
- Knowledge of core reasons for falls, particularly in the geriatric community
- Demonstrated knowledge/experience in applying the principles of falls prevention
- Knowledge and skills in providing occupational therapy assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of individuals with mobility issues
- Knowledge of common medications that contribute to falls, environmental assessment, and community resources
- Working knowledge of PIPEDA (Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, PHIPA (Personal Health Information Protection Act)

- Must be capable of establishing positive interpersonal relationships and able to work as an effective team member
- Ability to work with persons with varied histories and within all environments
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent organizational, critical thinking, and problem solving skills
- Crisis intervention skills
- Able to work under pressure, prioritize workload and meet deadlines
- Adaptable, creative, innovative and flexible
- Experience in the development of teaching materials and the teaching of clients, family, and caregivers
- French Language is an asset
- Proficient computer skills for report writing, assessments, word processing, workload measurement and access to information, etc.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- Must possess and maintain a valid and unrestricted specified license for the class of the vehicle operated
- Must maintain ability to travel in a timely manner to other offices, work locations, or sites as authorized by the Corporation for business reasons.
- In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Criminal Records Check and submit a Canadian Police Clearance Certificate
- Able to work flexible hours as required to support a 24/7 operation
- Free of communicable disease as per the Ambulance Service Communicable Disease Standards
- Up-to-date immunizations as per Ambulance Act of Ontario
