Job Description

Job Summary

Under the guidance of the Training Supervisor, Operations Supervisor or System Status Controller, an SSC trainee will receive, assess, monitor, allot priority to and communicate a prompt response in both English and French to obtain maximum coverage and efficiency for all requests for routine and emergency ambulance services, fire services and other agencies where required, and maintain accurate records of all calls and movements in a closely supervised environment in order to develop the competencies of the System Status Controller position.

QUALIFICATIONS

Educational

  • Hold an Ontario Secondary School Graduation diploma or have academic qualifications approved as equivalent by the Ministry of Education.

Experience

  • Core & CAD Ambulance Communication 640 hour accredited course or equivalent is an asset
  • Up to 6 (six) months experience in a call centre environment
  • Knowledge of ambulance operations, policies and procedures is an asset.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology in order to understand medical diagnosis and condition of patients and to communicate with paramedics, physicians and other hospital staff is an asset.
  • Experience in an EMS communications centre is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Regional Niagara, its district transportation systems and roadways is an asset.

Other Qualifications Required

  • Position requires qualifications as per Regulation 19, Part III (8) of the Ambulance Act of Ontario.
  • Hold or acquire within 30 days of employment, a valid first-aid certificate: and a valid restricted radio-telephone operator’s certificate.
  • Hold a valid cardiopulmonary resuscitation certificate to the Basic Rescuer level at the time of employment and be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation every twenty-four (24) months thereafter.
  • Hold or acquire Core & CAD Ambulance Communication 640-hour course approved by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and obtained a pass standing in an emergency communication examination set or approved by the Ministry of Health & Long Term Care.
  • Fluency in both English and French is an asset.

Special Conditions

  • In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Criminal Records Check and submit a Canadian Police Clearance.
  • Any legislated requirements in accordance with the Ambulance Act of Ontario
  • It is the employee’s responsibility to possess and maintain a valid and restriction-free driver’s license of appropriate class to carry out the duties of the job.
  • An annual influenza vaccination is recommended.
Other Competencies Required
  • Ability to critically, competently and consistently assess circumstances of an incident in order to deploy assistance to caller as appropriate.
  • Ability of spatial concepts in order to elicit and understand directions and geographic information to ensure appropriate resources (i.e., paramedics, firefighters, etc.) arrive at an incident without delay.
  • Communication and decision-making skills are required for determining the nature of the calls and for assigning emergency priority and for communicating with individuals in an extreme state of mental anxiety.
  • Keyboarding skills at 45 wpm with 90% accuracy and ability to operate computerized telecommunications and information software.
  • To be considered for employment, candidates must successfully demonstrate pre-employment qualifications which are determined through standardized tests and training.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
