Educational Assistant

PURPOSE: Reporting to the Principal of Quw'utsun Smuneem Elementary School, the purpose of the Educational Assistant is to provide student support in literacy and numeracy with an emphasis on physical activity, healthy living and Cowichan culture under the direction of the classroom teacher. This is full-time term position for the remainder of the 2024/2025 school year that works primarily at the school with minimal local travel required. A term renewal for this position is subject to funding & student enrollment.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: The position includes paid sick leave and the opportunity for paid training. Depending on experience and qualifications, the position has a starting salary of $23.02 $30.32 per hour.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist Students in a Variety of Academic Activities:
Assist student learning and skill development on a variety of curriculum topics individually or in small groups
Assist students experiencing difficulty in completing in-class assignments by providing further explanation and guidance on course curriculum
Provide individual and small group instruction when needed
Provide guidance for integration of Cowichan culture, values, and language in classroom activities
Guide and support student behaviors during lunch supervision
Maintain order and manage student behaviours in partnership with classroom teachers
Create a safe learning environment for all students
Engage in professional development, school events / activities and staff meetings to improve student learning
Demonstrate positive role model behaviors to students
Other related duties as required
Provide Administrative Support to Quw'utsun Smuneem Elementary School Staff:
Assist the classroom teacher with any administrative duties, such as photocopying, marking, note taking, recording assignments, and class demonstrations as needed
Participate in team meetings and debrief with team members regarding any student issues that arise and upcoming program activities
Other related duties as required
Foster Physical Literacy and Skill Development
Encourage and support the physical, social, emotional and cultural development of students by positively reinforcing appropriate classroom behaviours and modeling Cowichan teachings
Provide experiential learning opportunities through developmentally appropriate play during gym, recess and lunch time; maintain order and monitor students; encourage safety habits in work and organized activities
Plan and facilitate school programs which includes setting up, storing and maintaining equipment
Other related duties as required
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (please attach all required documents)
Minimum completion of Grade 12 with demonstrated proficiency in Mathematics and English; Diploma in Early Childhood Education or Child & Youth Care preferred. A combination of relevant training and experience will be considered
1-3 years' related experience with a focus on activities such as coaching, skating, canoeing with elementary school students preferred
Valid First-Aid / CPR-C Certification is an asset
Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector clearance required

Strong communication and interpersonal skills to foster good working relationships with teachers, students, parents, administrators and other community-based partnerships
Demonstrated patience and resourcefulness while working with students of different abilities and learning styles
Self-motivated to carry out any duties as assigned with minimal supervision or direction
Strengths-based approach with a compassionate attitude and understanding of child development
Knowledge and understanding of the Hul'q'umi'num language, Cowichan culture, customs and traditions
