What can I expect to do in this role?In this position, you will:
• Review traffic engineering studies based on mathematical and engineering theories, and cost analysis to make recommendations
• Provide information and advice to staff related to the management of existing transportation infrastructure and proposed transportation engineering designs
• Prepare formal reports and present study findings and recommendations related to traffic engineering issues for technical and non-technical staff

How do I qualify?Mandatory• You are a Professional Engineer, licensed with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
• The position requires the successful candidate to have a valid class G driver's license or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's license upon being hired.

Traffic Engineering Knowledge• You have knowledge of traffic engineering including local, provincial and national traffic standards and practices such as signing, markings and delineation, capacity, intersection design and operations, traffic signal design and operations, traffic signal progression, roadside safety, detouring and staging, illumination, traffic characteristics and human factors
• You have knowledge of highway planning, design, highway construction and maintenance practices

Analytical and Problem - Solving Skills• You have strong mathematical skills for probability and statistical analysis, financial and risk analysis, and advanced engineering research
• You have strong analytical and problem solving skills to integrate data, solve complex technical problems and make recommendations
• You utilize analytical skills to evaluate and select service providers, set priorities and monitor schedules and resource expenditures for multiple concurrent projects

Consultation and Judgment Skills• You use consultation skills to provide advice to senior management on transportation engineering issues and to recommend operational and safety improvements and enhancements
• You have developed interpersonal skills to build successful working relationships with internal clients and project stakeholders
• You have the ability to provide and communicate technical advice and recommendations to senior management and various stakeholders
• You utilize judgment and tact to discuss politically sensitive and controversial issues with internal and external stakeholders

Communication Skills• You have strong written communication skills to prepare engineering reports, design proposals and management briefings on complex transportation issues using various computer applications such as word processing and data processing
• You have developed oral communication and presentation skills to present design options and represent the Ministry as an expert witness in court proceedings and other formal hearings

Legislation and Policy Knowledge• You have knowledge of related legislative acts such as Highway Traffic Act, Public Transportation and Highway Improvement Act and Occupational Health and Safety Act to ensure adherence to legislation in relevant matters related to traffic engineering
• You have knowledge of policies and practices related to service provider acquisition and management
