Director, Sustainability Reporting & Analytics

The opportunity

The Director, Sustainability Reporting & Analytics has overall accountability for sustainability related financial reporting, including the following:

  • Understand emerging sustainability reporting standards and work with the Sustainable Investing (SI) team to establish OTPP sustainability reporting to address emerging reporting requirements.

  • Ensure that OTPP collects the information needed for sustainability related measurements and disclosure.

  • Advocacy and thought leadership related to sustainability reporting within and beyond OTPP.

  • Analysis and calculations related to Portfolio Carbon Footprint, comparison to targets, manage related external audit and related coordination with SI on methodology.

  • Maintain metrics relate to Green Bond reporting, manage related external audit and contribute to annual Green Bond reporting.

The sustainability related information is used for regulatory reporting, as well as in management reporting used by the Investment Division and Total Fund Management to inform investment and strategic decisions.

Who you'll work with
  • This position is responsible for the leadership of the Sustainability Reporting and Analytics group, which is made up of a team of financial analysts specialized in sustainability related analysis and reporting.

  • The Director of Sustainability Reporting and Analytics serves as a direct resource to the Managing Director, Valuation & Analytics and the CFO and is expected to make recommendations/decision on complex issues related to the sustainability measurements and reporting of the fund.

What you'll do

Reporting

  • Ensures the group effectively monitors and provides ongoing sustainability related analysis (including the Portfolio Carbon Footprint (PCF) and metrics required for the Green Bond report), other sustainability reporting and disclosure. Additionally, ensures that the group measures the foregoing against established targets, where relevant.

  • Responsible for the measurement, tracking and reporting of OTPP’s PDF on a monthly basis, including manging the external audit process.

  • In conjunction with Finance Transformation initiatives, further automate and streamline sustainability related calculations and management reporting and explore ability to drive deeper analytics (e.g. predictive analytics, sensitivity analyses) and insights, as well as continue deployment of self-service tools such as PowerBI.

  • Help define new reporting requirements, leveraging ongoing best practice and stakeholder needs, and ensure new requirements are met

  • Assess emerging reporting regulations and their impact on sustainability reporting measures and disclosures (i.e. ISSB Climate Change and Sustainability reporting/disclosure prototypes/exposure drafts/standards)

  • Work with SI to provide key contribution to OTPP’s Green Bond report and sustainability related disclosures in OTPP’s Annual Report.

  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with the other functional Finance groups to ensure efficient co-ordination of work.

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders including SI (Total Fund Management) and Investment departments to ensure in-depth understanding of their sustainability measurement and reporting needs and responding to their inquiries and requests.

  • Act as the senior level relationship contact point on any escalated sustainability measurement and reporting related issues/matters

  • Work closely with the SI in the development and implementation of enhanced reporting disclosures and measurements, e.g. accounting of financed emissions (sovereign debt emissions, scope 3 emissions).

  • Liaises with other pension plans, sustainability reporting advisors and industry participants to keep apprised of current and emerging sustainability measurement, reporting and disclosure practices and incorporate new methodologies and relevant regulatory requirements into current reporting practices.

Technology

  • Responsible for the oversight and enhancement of the Portfolio Carbon Footprint tool and Climate Change Dashboard.

  • In partnership with SI and Enterprise Operations (EOD - IT) works to maintain the PCF tool and where needed, improve/enhance PCF measures and reporting

Management accountability

  • Assess the group’s mandate, team composition and skills, and recommend changes as needed.

  • Responsible for planning and developing strategic initiatives for the Sustainability Reporting and Analytics group

  • Responsible to lead, recruit, training, develop and motivate a team of sustainability measurement and reporting specialists.

  • Responsible for the performance management of staff, Including, conducting performance evaluations, providing career development advice and coaching

  • Manages on the job training and approves external training and conferences based on recommendations from the team

  • Recommends staffing and compensation changes for management and staff

Decision making

  • This position serves as a direct resource to the Managing Director, Valuation & Analytics and the CFO and is expected to make recommendations/decision on complex issues based on the research of the team.

  • This position interacts with the Senior Leadership team organization wide and must consider impacts and implications of decisions across the division and organization.

  • In this role, the incumbent will identify opportunities / requirements and develop solutions / courses of action where there may be no precedent internally, and little externally. Due to the analytical nature of the activities, a high level of constructive thought will be necessary. Excellent analytical ability, judgment, independent and creative thinking is essential to identify, research and interpret pertinent information. The ability to identify solutions and make recommendations is also required.

What you'll need

  • Approximately 10+ years of related professional experience in investment valuation, analysis and/or financial reporting with 5+ years managing a team

  • University Degree, preferably with an CBV or CFA or MBA

  • CPA designation

  • Strong technical valuation knowledge and analytical foundation

  • Excellent knowledge of investments analysis and assessment

  • Possess sound valuation skills including a keen awareness of sustainability related risks impacting value

  • Must understand relationship between ESG risk and value

  • Strong project management skills

  • Direct experience in valuation and sustainability risk monitoring and reporting

  • Financial services experience a must, with pension or investment fund experience preferred

  • Solid experience in project management / special projects

  • Extensive use of MS Office products
