Principal, Capital Markets - Private Credit

The opportunity

We are looking for a Principal to join our Private Credit team in Toronto. As an integral member of the team focused on direct credit investments globally, you will play a key part in the evaluation and execution of private credit investment opportunities.

Reporting to the Managing Director, Private Credit, the Principal will work collaboratively across the Credit Department in the identification, assessment, and management of private credit opportunities and significantly grow the portfolio. Private Credit is a dynamic and fast-growing team with an excellent track record in deploying capital in unique and complex credit opportunities targeting low- to mid-double-digit returns and a path to triple its existing multi-billion AUM in the next few years.

Who they will work with

The Credit team is a diverse group of over thirty professionals based in Toronto and London investing across the full spectrum of credit products and a wide variety of investment styles including fundamental analysis, structured credit, thematic strategies, enhanced indexing, quantitative and systematic strategies, and fund investments.

The Credit team’s broad mandate enables collaboration with professionals across OTPP’s investment teams in Equities, Infrastructure, Teachers Venture Growth, and Real Estate globally. As part of a dynamic Capital Markets environment, you will be exposed to the different strategies and risk-taking styles within the broader group through regular interactions.

What you'll do
  • Independently drive deal evaluation, diligence and execution of a diverse set of private credit opportunities with support from the team’s junior talent

  • Investment opportunities for evaluation will span across industry sectors, structures (including senior loans, unitranches, converts) and counterparties (sponsored and non-sponsored)

  • Play a role in managing relationships with both internal and external parties

  • Work with internal Investments teams and industry experts to facilitate due diligence, including bottoms-up analysis of companies and markets

  • Collaborate within the broader Credit team sharing single name, sector and market views across different strategies to enhance overall Credit team performance

  • Contribute to the evolution and execution of the strategic direction of the private credit team

What you'll need
  • ~5+ years of work experience, in private transaction roles including Private Credit, M&A, Private Equity, Investment Banking and Financial Restructuring

  • Experience in playing a leading role in the investment process, including conducting due diligence and negotiating documentation

  • Strong academic background, with a financial designation (i.e. MBA, CFA, CBV or CA designation a plus)

  • Well developed negotiation skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build constructive relationships with internal and external parties

  • Strong communication and presentation skills, both oral and written

  • An ability to balance priorities, work independently, meet tight timelines, lead projects, and thrive in a high-performance team environment

  • High commitment to be a team player, with a genuine collaborative spirit

  • Strong sense of business ethics, high standard of work ethic and professional integrity

  • Willing to travel
