Job Description:

Parsons has been a leader in the planning, design and delivery of transportation infrastructure across the world for more than 75 years. We are looking for an experienced terrestrial biologist with strong client relationships to add to our Infrastructure team in the Greater Toronto Region. You will have the flexibility to work from an office in Toronto, Markham, London, Toronto or Oakville and also from home. Our team is focused on helping our provincial and municipal clients expand and improve their transportation systems through innovative solutions to their tough planning and design challenges.

Parsons is seeking a Senior Terrestrial Biologist for our team in Ontario to join the Environmental Services Group in Ontario. In this role the successful candidate be an integral part of the environmental group and will be involved in a wide range of projects across the province including fieldwork planning and associated investigations and inventories, impact assessment studies and mitigation plans, during and post-construction monitoring of environmental project components, and preparation of technical reports and memos. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in the field as required but will primarily be an Office position with flexible office work arrangements.

The Senior Biologist/Ecologist’s key responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to growth opportunities our Environmental Services business line
  • Liaise with existing public and private sector clients, regulatory agencies and sub-consultants
  • Provide mentorship, technical advice and guidance to intermediate and junior staff members
  • Organizes, undertake and participate in biological field investigations and data collection (e.g., breeding bird and amphibian surveys, bat acoustic surveys, vegetation inventories and tree surveys, wildlife and species at risk surveys, Ecological Land Classification assessment, wetland evaluations, and fisheries assessments) following established protocols.
  • Experience conducting Species at Risk habitat and Significant Wildlife Habitat assessments and species-specific surveys
  • Strong technical writing skills; provide high quality senior review of technical documents; report writing, impact assessment, ecological reporting.
  • Manage project workloads, scheduling and coordination
  • Assists with proposal development, work programs, managing project budgets and invoicing.
  • Lead/assist with Project Management/coordination of ecological services work

Skills & Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in a related role
  • Experience providing ecological consulting services for public and private sector clients
  • Post-secondary education in environmental science/studies, biology/ecology, geography, or related field
  • Strong organizational and communication skills including the ability to manage multiple projects to schedule and coordinate various activities related to proposals and project delivery
  • Experience in the collection, analysis, and reporting of field data following established protocols
  • Experience in the accurate identification of Ontario flora and fauna (trees, shrubs, wildflowers, grasses, birds, reptiles amphibians, mammals, and/or insects).
  • Experience on Metrolinx and MTO projects; RAQS Certification (Nature Science, EA Planning Etc.) considered an asset or experience to obtain RAQS certification.
  • Experience with obtaining permits and approvals under the Endangered Species Act, Species at Risk Act, Fisheries Act, Migratory Birds Convention Act, Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act
  • Current or past certification as an ISA Certified Arborist or Registered Professional Forester is considered an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of Species at Risk found in Ontario, including identification, habitat, and life-history.
  • Experience in completing Impact Assessment following municipal, provincial or federal policies or acts.
  • Maintaining and organizing accurate and detailed fieldnotes as well as photo documentation records.
  • Proficiency in the use of ArcGIS Software.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills particularly technical report writing. French language written and oral communication skills considered an asset.
