Pembina Hills School Division invites applications for an Accountant to manage day-to-day accounting operations.

Pembina Hills School Division provides education to approximately 3600 students in 16 community schools including two Hutterite Colony Schools and two outreach schools. PHSD also provides education to over 10,000 students from within and beyond our borders, through our online school, Vista Virtual School. The Position

The Accountant is responsible for managing and supervising the daily financial operations for the Division. This position is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the financial software system, providing and maintaining accurate financial and reporting information for administration, school sites, departments and external services. The Accountant provides support to senior administration and finance. Hours of work will be Monday-Friday working 37.5 hours/week. Duties to commence as soon as possible.

Key Responsibilities

Maintain and supervise the daily financial operations of the general ledger, including completion of: journal entries, reports, and account structure.

Direct, supervise and provide backup to all accounts payable, accounts receivable and cash-management functions.

Prepare daily, monthly bank reconciliations and execute funds transfers as required.

Prepare financial information on request for all school sites, various departments, external services and financial administration. Set up reports as needed.

Prepare required reporting to government entities, including Alberta Education, Canada Revenue Agency, and others.

Reconcile, review and allocate revenue received from all sources including Alberta Education, various grants, school deposits, online payments, scholarships, independent donations, etc.

Provide support and training to schools and departments on front-line accounting and finance tasks.

Maintain communication throughout the fiscal year with the auditor regarding interim and year-end audits.

Reconcile and prepare assets and liabilities reports.

Coordinate, oversee and participate in preparation of year-end working material for the interim and annual audit.

Act as a mediator for required audit information.

Reconcile and ensure financial reports by the finance department are accurate and complete.

Ensure integrity of the financial operating system by performing daily, weekly, monthly and yearly tasks required by the software.

Qualifications

Experience managing a financial software system in a complex environment.

Minimum of five years’ experience in a public sector finance or accounting environment.

Excellent organizational, interpersonal and computer skills.

Certificate, diploma or degree in accounting, business or management. Accounting designation preferred. Equivalencies will be considered.
