Description
* Graduate of an approved Licensed Practical Nursing education program required.
* Leads training preferred or combination of Leads and or leadership training courses.
* Current registration in good standing with CLPNM.
* Certifications preferred depending on the clinical area.
* Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Training as delineated in Prairie Mountain Health Policy PPG-00002 CPR Training.
* Successful completion of a Cardiac Rhythms Course
* Two (2) years equivalent full time experience on an acute medical unit as a Licensed Practical Nurse within the last five (5) years
* Minimum three years within the past 5 years recent related nursing experience and demonstrated strong leadership skills in the applicable area.
* Successful completion of a relevant post basic program may be required or preferred in designated areas.
* Province of Manitoba Class 5 Drivers Licence, or equivalent from province of residence, and access to a personal vehicle to provide service within Prairie Mountain Health.
* Proficiency with Microsoft programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint), as well as Internet applications and other Information Technology.
* Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to work independently.
* Demonstrated problem solving and decision making skills.
* Demonstrated flexibility to facilitate changes in techniques and procedures in a changing environment.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of, and in collaboration with the manager, the Clinical Resource Nurse (CRN)/Charge Nurse is responsible for providing clinical leadership and daily supervision to nurses and, as relevant, to other members of the inter-disciplinary collaborative team. The CRN assumes a leadership role in coordinating patient/resident/client care within the healthcare team to ensure quality patient/resident/client care outcomes and promotes an interdisciplinary patient/resident/client centered approach to care based on best practice. The CRN/Charge Nurse demonstrates a commitment to the vision, values, goals, and objectives of the region/facility/unit.
The CRN/Charge Nurse assists with the clinical direction, guidance, and contributes to the assessment and evaluation of the clinical practice of staff in collaboration with the manager and in accordance with accepted Standards of Nursing Practice.
The CRN/Charge Nurse recognizes and fulfills their professional responsibilities by practicing in a manner consistent with professional obligations to take actions as per the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics for Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba as well as any other Provincial and Federal legislation.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Overview:
1. Co-ordinates patient/resident care activities with the health care team in a prioritized and planned approach to achieve pre-established patient/resident care outcomes.
2. Provides direct nursing care to patients/residents and families as necessary.
3. Makes patient/resident care judgments with other members of the care team by assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care, as evidenced in documented nursing care plans.
4. Provides support and feedback to the care team in the implementation of individualized nursing care.
5. Maintains current knowledge of patient/resident status within the unit/clinical area; notifies appropriate personnel of any significant unusual situations.
6. Assists in the effective and efficient provision of staff resources to meet patient/resident needs in the unit/clinical area i.e. day to day shift assignments.
7. Assists in the achievement and maintenance of nursing standards for professional nursing staff in accordance with overall professional and facility/regional standards.
8. In collaboration with the service team, identifies and recommends actions that will improve functioning of the unit/clinical area.
9. Promotes and maintains a positive working climate within the unit/clinical area.
10. Coordinates specific components of a clinical program as applicable i.e. patient and family conferencing, discharge planning, medication reviews etc..
11. Participates in the development and review of clinical regional policies and procedures.
12. Communicates patient/resident/client status concerns to appropriate health care team members in a timely manner.
13. Assists staff to maintain clinical expertise as new methods and techniques are developed and introduced, as based on research findings.
14. Functions as a resource to the public and other departments/programs regarding direct patient/resident care activities.
15. Ensures documentation is complete and is consistent with regional policy including that of the health record, transfer sheets, incident reports, etc.
16. Coaches and facilitates performance of direct care providers in the designated area.
17. Provides direct clinical education to nursing and other staff within the unit/ward/site including but not limited to:
- Teaching pre-developed content as needed and/or providing clinical expertise to facility orientation, staff development and/or the provision of safe care.
- Empowering and assisting staff to gain and/or maintain clinical expertise in new clinical policies, procedures, techniques and/or skills.
- Following personal training; certifies and/or recertifies staff in organizational required competencies and/or transfer of functions.
- Coordinating, leading and providing the orientation of new staff and students to the unit/ward/site.
18. As requested and required; provides assistance to the Clinical Education Coordinators and the Regional Education Team by:
- Assisting in the achievement and maintenance of nursing standards of practice in accordance with the overall professional, provincial, regional and facility standards.
- Communicates and promotes staff attendance, participation, involvement and support in regionally developed educational programs.
- Identifies, notifies and arranges educational needs of staff to the Clinical Education Team for the delivery of inservices, events, meetings and/or workshops.
- Ordering, posting or informing staff of current facility, regional and/or provincial instructional or reference material. Other duties as assigned.
