The Planning Technician will provide technical support and play a key role in supporting the essential land use functions of the Planning and Forestry Department. He/she will be a first point of contact for digital and in-person requests from residents, customers and interdepartmental services.

The Urban Planning Technician will maintain the Geographic Information System, the information layers and the various links between the different databases specific to the files and projects related to the Urban Planning and Forestry Department. Duties include: maintaining, creating and analyzing cartographic data, editing spatial data, updating information contained in databases, producing data for specific projects.

Requested skills

  • College diploma (2 years) or equivalent in a planning program (e.g. urban design, planning technician, geography, etc.) with emphasis on geographic information systems.
  • Ideally two (2) years' professional experience in technical planning.
  • Eligible for membership in the Canadian Association of Certified Planning Technicians (CACPT).
  • Proficiency in computer software such as computer-aided design (CAD), geographic information systems (GIS), graphic design and database software.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Excellent knowledge of French and English (oral and written).
  • Experience in thematic cartography.
  • Experience in GIS data manipulation.
  • Thorough knowledge of ESRI software.
  • Knowledge and basic understanding of the Planning Act and any other regulations and laws applicable to the Urban Planning and Forestry Department.
  • Experience with zoning by-laws, official plan policies and other planning policy documents.
  • Ability to work with a computer and knowledge of: Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Pro, Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Map interpretation skills, photography
