He/she works cooperatively with other employees, students and the public.Duties & Responsibilities� Operates grounds maintenance equipment, such as mowers, tractors, trimmers and sprayers.� Operates, repairs and maintains irrigation systems.� Performs a wide range of horticultural duties such as cultivating grounds beds, planting flower beds, shrubs, trees, etc., pruning, fertilization, weeding, applying herbicide and pesticides.� Performs lawn maintenance, including mowing, edging and trimming.� Performs planning and development/construction of new landscape areas at new sites.� Performs safety and maintenance inspections and keeps accurate records. � Prepares written and oral reports, work schedules, estimates and budgets.� Mixes and places (pours) concrete.� Repairs and maintains equipment including small engine repair, minor bodywork and blade sharpening.� Performs parking lot maintenance, including sweeping, asphalt repair, placing barricades and weed control.� Performs manual tasks such as digging, raking and bending.� Reports work completed, including time and materials used.� Cleans shop, including emptying garbage cans.� Performs other maintenance related or emergent duties.� Coordinates workload of utilitypersons or other maintenance employees.� Supervises apprentices. Equipment UsedHand tools, air tools, power tools, ladder, chain hoist, scaffolding, truck, aerial bucket, mower, tractor, sweeper, blade sharpener.Required Knowledge, Ability & Skills� High school diploma or equivalent.� A valid BC or Interprovincial Landscape Horticulture Certificate.� A valid BC Class 5 driver�s license.� A valid Herbicide and Pesticide applicator license/certificate as issued by the Ministry of Environment.� Advanced knowledge of and skill in the effective and safe operation and routine maintenance of the equipment used.� Knowledge of health and safety practices, including Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System and Workers� Compensation Board regulations.� Ability to plan and schedule work and organize workloads effectively.� Good health and strength sufficient to perform the required manual tasks.� Ability to work in confined areas and at heights.� Ability to use courtesy and tact in explaining, exchanging data or information in contacts with public, parents, staff and students.� Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.� Ability to perform individually and as part of a team.Draft: September 11, 2006Journeyperson GardenerRevised: April 4, 2014Landscape Horticulturist
