Teacher of Students with Vision Impairments

The Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments uses strength-based and trauma informed approaches and a universal design framework to support classroom teachers and support staff working with students with low vision or who are blind including those with additional complex needs.

The Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments collaborates with classroom teachers to support student success in the classroom environment including providing and adapting instructional materials in a variety of alternate formats including: digital, adapted print, auditory and tactile materials. This teacher provides individualized instruction in areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum such as the use of access technology, self-advocacy, braille, independent living, and orientation and mobility skills. Additionally, based on the students’ individual strengths and stretches, provides individualized opportunities for students to develop the core competencies.

The Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments consults regularly with case managers; to develop and implement Individual Education Plans, Primary Learning Plans and Positive Behaviour Support Plans. This teacher enables student access to prevention and intervention related supports and services as per student social, emotional, physical, mental well-being. This teacher coordinates specialized services such as orientation and mobility, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and augmented and alternative communication speech and language pathology services.

This teacher liaises with Learning Services personnel, provincial outreach programs, and outside agencies in support of students and families including: The Provincial Resource Centre for the Visually Impaired, Sunny Hill Children’s Health Centre, and The Children’s Low Vision Project.

Qualifications

Diploma or Master’s in the area of Inclusive Education with a specialization in the education of students who are blind or visually impaired.

Successful elementary or secondary level teaching experience.

Experience using a strength-based approach and a UDL framework to enable student access to curriculum learning in the classroom environment.

Experience developing and implementing Individual Education Plans.

Current CPI training an asset.
