LOCKSMITH

Richmond School District operates 38 elementary schools, 10 secondary schools, alternate programs, continuing education and a number of additional facilities. The district enrolls approximately 21,000 students (K-12) and employs over 3000 dedicated staff.

This position provides locksmith services to all existing District facilities. The incumbent uses locksmith

skills in performing functions involving the installation, maintenance and repair of locks and associated

hardware in all District facilities. The position is under the supervision of the Assistant Manager

Maintenance, but work is performed independently with instructions received from the Senior

Tradesperson as required.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

(This is not an exhaustive list of the duties to be performed.)

Repairs locks and closures for all District facilities.

Installs, modifies, repairs and maintains all door associated hardware including locks, dead bolts,

flush bolts, panic hardware, hinges, door closures, etc.

Prepares estimates of labour and materials required for new installations, repair or replacement of

related equipment.

Maintains, updates and audits key inventories; cuts, codes and records master keys; prepares and

assists for Card Entry in existing and new schools and may need to provide specs for new facilities.

Provides advice on methods of reducing the number of interior and exterior lock sets in all facilities

without affecting the security of the facilities.

Ensures that equipment and supplies used to perform duties are stored and maintained in a neat

and orderly manner.

Ensures adequate supplies/inventory are maintained in Lock Vehicles and STORES are on hand.

Submits stores orders/requisitions and ensures that orders and equipment received are properly

stored, maintained and used in accordance with district standards.

Responds to service calls and security system calls as required.

Provides support and technical advice to other trades and district staff relating to the use and

maintenance of door hardware and equipment.

Provides technical advice regarding locking devices as it relates to fire and building locks.

Completes written records related to work performed.

Maintains familiarity with current standards regulating the locksmith trade.

Ensures work area remains safe and free of debris while on the job site, at the end of each day and upon completion of work order.

Performs duties in compliance with District and Government health and safety procedures and

regulations that relate to the work performed, to minimize potential for accidents, injuries or

hazards.

Performs other job related duties of comparable importance, difficulty and responsibility as

required.

Required Qualifications (Knowledge, skills and abilities)

Grade 12 or equivalent plus a BC or Interprovincial Certificate of Apprenticeship in Locksmithing or

equivalent apprenticeship training and a BC or Interprovincial Certificate of Qualification in

Locksmithing (T.Q.).

Two (2) years experience at a Journeyman level in commercial or institutional Locksmith service

work.

Ability to assist in drawing up specs for new and existing buildings.

Thorough knowledge of current techniques, methods, procedures and equipment applicable to the

locksmith trade.

Competency in the use and care of tools and equipment common to the trade.

Ability to organize workload, work under periodic pressure and complete assignments with minimal

supervision.

Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, pushing, pulling and moving heavy materials,

equipment and supplies and working in confined spaces.

Valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence.

Good interpersonal skills.

This is a unionized position that offers a 40-hour work week with an hourly wage of $39.75, plus a comprehensive benefit package including Municipal Pension, health, vacation, and sick benefits.
