THE OPPORTUNITY: GARDENER
The Grounds Department is concerned with the maintenance and construction of all school board facilities from the site buildings to the sidewalks. This includes all lawn and garden areas, sports fields, playgrounds, fencing, underground services and all asphalt areas. This constitutes year-round support programs and includes seasonal extremes such as snow and excessive rainfall.
This position may be assigned to any VSB worksite under the auspices of Grounds. Employees may be required to move from site to site during the workday. The successful candidate will be required to work with minimal direct supervision in a team environment and maintain collegial working relationships. Staff are required to communicate with school principals, school staff and students to ensure minimal disruption to the learning environment. All employees are required to work safely in accordance with WorkSafe B.C. guidelines.
In this position, you will:
Trim hedges
Provide grass sports fields and lawn maintenance
Perform record keeping related to the work
Ensure the security of material, equipment and tools at the worksite
Perform other assigned duties within the job description
QUALIFICATIONS
Must have a valid BC Trades Qualifications Certificate in Horticulture.
Must be able to meet the high physical demands of the work. Examples of which include exposure to a variety of weather conditions, vibration and noise, dust and flying particles, lifting and carrying heavy objects, physical coordination and exertion in a variety of postures, working in dirty and dusty environments, sustained postures for some tasks, working in confined spaces or at heights.
COMPENSATION
The salary for this position is $37.23/hour (paid as 7.5 hours/day) plus full benefits after successful completion of the probationary period.
