THE OPPORTUNITY: ON-CALL/TEMPORARY MULTI-CULTURAL LIASON SUPPORT WITH CANTONESE FLUENCY (SCHOOL & STUDENT SUPPORT B)

Location: Newcomer Welcome Centre (1000 East 59th Avenue)

In this position, you will:

Assist students from Cantonese speaking communities to understand and derive the maximum benefit from the school system and to help parents and custodians understand the school system, their responsibilities and how to participate in the education of their students

Assist school and district staff with the educational and social development of students, including interviewing students and relaying information and judgment of the student’s responses

Provide interpretation in one to one and group meetings, public meetings and public inquiries by telephone or in person, and other situations as required

Act as a liaison amongst district staff, school counselors, teachers, administrators, students, local custodians, and parents in the country of origin

Provide translation and interpretation service between school staff and students/families in English and Cantonese

Provide professional development around cultural competency to other district staff

Perform school & student support duties to support the schools and District

Perform other work within the job band as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of grade 12 plus 2 years of full time equivalent post-secondary education and/or a diploma in any of the following areas:Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Immigration/Migration studies, Ethnic/Cultural/Indigenous studies, Human Development and Family studies, Applied Behaviour Science or Education

Minimum of two (2) years of related work experience

Must possess extensive knowledge of the problems involved in cultural adaptation in an educational setting

Sound knowledge of school and community resources available to International students, and working knowledge of general policies, curriculum and operation of public school districts in BC

Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals and groups, such as staff, students and families

Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs

Must be willing to travel throughout the district

Fluency in Cantonese and written Chinese (traditional or simplified) required

Fluency in Mandarin is an asset

COMPENSATION

The salary for this position is $38.05/hour (7 hours/day maximum) plus 20% in lieu of all benefits and statutory holidays (or 14% if contributing to an existing municipal pension plan). Working months are September to June each year.

This position is on-call to cover short-term vacancies and staff absences. Currently there is full-time work available until Oct 25th and then the position will be on-call afterwards.
