THE OPPORTUNITY: YOUTH & FAMILY SUPPORT WORKER - URGENT INTERVENTION (SCHOOL & STUDENT SUPPORT B)

In collaboration with and under the direction of the Urgent Intervention Process Team, this position serves the needs of elementary and secondary high and low incidence students within the district who exhibit a significant need for additional support and instruction in the areas of social-emotional learning, behavior, mental health and/or learning difficulties.

In this position, you will:

In collaboration with and under the direction of the of the Urgent Intervention Process Team (UIP), design and implement individual Behaviour Support Plans for both high and low incidence students exhibiting challenging behaviours.

Maintain and evaluate records/data of observed student behaviour.

Collaborate with team members regarding Behaviour Support Plans.

Provide support to students with respect to their behaviour/learning difficulties.

Manage verbal and/or physical “acting out” behaviour.

Prepare instructional/behaviour aid materials.

Liaise with parents/caregivers.

Provide school & student support to schools.

Perform other work within the job band as assigned.

Itinerant Assignment:

A School & Student Support worker is hired to work throughout the Vancouver School District and not for a particular school or a restricted set of duties. Although in posted vacancies specific reference may be made to a school and to the duties associated with that assignment, Employee Services may transfer staff within the system in certain circumstances as deemed appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of grade 12 plus 2 years of full time equivalent post-secondary education and/or a diploma in any of the following areas: Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Immigration/Migration studies, Ethnic/Cultural/Indigenous studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Applied Behaviour Science or Education.

Minimum of 2 years related work experience.

Strong knowledge and experience in implementing various learning and behavior management strategies.

Ability to establish positive relationships with individual students and school teams in order to build school capacity.

Participation and facilitation in professional development opportunities relating to behavior management (e.g.: non-violent crisis intervention, conflict resolution) would be an asset.

Must be willing to obtain Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training.

Will be required to travel to various schools throughout the district.

COMPENSATION

The salary for this position is $38.05/hour (7 hours/day, 5 days/week) plus a comprehensive benefits package, including Municipal Pension Plan, Vancouver Employee Savings Plan, Extended Health, Dental, Group Life, Long Term Disability, Vacation, & Gratuity Days.

Working months are September to June each year.
