Indigenous Cultural Enhancement Worker

TEMPORARY FULL-TIME (ASAP to June 30, 2025) - 35 hours/week.

The Burnaby School District is seeking a skilled, enthusiastic individual who enjoys challenges, seizes opportunities and wants to make a difference, to join our Indigenous Education team. The Indigenous Cultural Enhancement worker, as part of the integrated educational team, assists in the planning, development and delivery of cultural programs to honour Indigenous students. Mentors and establishes connections with Indigenous youth and provides authentic school programming to strengthen learning, sense of self and cultural identity.

Duties:

Works collaboratively with school-based staff and District educational teams, to assist in the design, implementation, delivery and monitoring of targeted cultural program and activities.

Engages students in identified cultural programs and activities that enhance cultural identity such as: field trips, cultural events, group activities, extra-curricular activities, presentations.

Learns the various cultural backgrounds of Indigenous students to develop relationships, provide mentorship, and appropriately support students.

Advocates for the health and well-being of Indigenous Youth and families by establishing and following meaningful educational plans.

Provides academic support to Indigenous students by providing "pull in" cultural support, primarily working in small groups inside the classroom.

Provides family support when necessary via visits and phone calls to the home.

Participates in District Indigenous Education activities and events as required.

Applicants must possess:

Successful candidates will have a minimum Grade 12 supplemented by post-secondary training up to six (6) months in duration. One year of related work experience with Indigenous youth in an educational setting or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Thorough understanding of Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being

Sound knowledge of community and agency resources.

Working knowledge of computer operation related to work performed.

Thorough knowledge of safety procedures related to work performed.

Valid B.C. Driver’s License (Class 5).

This position is 35 hours/week. Hours of work will be determined. This is a temporary position starting ASAP to June 30, 2025. The hourly rate of pay is $32.31 per hour effective July 1, 2024.
