Qualicum School District is centrally situated on east Vancouver Island and covers the area of Nanoose Bay to Bowser and spans from Errington across the Strait of Georgia to Lasqueti Island. We serve a student population of approximately 4700 students. Qualicum School District consists of eight elementary schools (Grades K-7), two secondary schools (Grade 8-12), an alternate school (PASS/Woodwinds) and a Distributed Learning program to support home-learning families called the Collaborative Education Alternative Program (CEAP). False Bay School on Lasqueti Island is entirely off-grid with an immense solar project recently completed. POSITION: Temporary Child and Youth Care Worker / Drug and Alcohol Support Worker

ASSIGNMENT: 25.00 hours per week, 10 months per year, school days only commencing September 3, 2024 until June 26, 2025. Travel is required, mileage expense will be available as needed.

JOB FUNCTION: An employee in this classification, as part of the School-Based Team, provides guidance, instructional support, direction, and intervention strategies for students at risk or experiencing social, emotional, behavioral, mental, and/or developmental disorders and/or difficulties.

An employee in this classification will build trusting relationships and provide support to students (at multiple school sites) and their families when students are in violation of Board Policy 7165 and/or at the request of the District Drug and Alcohol Review Committee (DDARC).

REPORTING TO: School Principal and District Social Worker

The role of this position will be to support vulnerable in-risk students, ages 10-18yrs in an outreach capacity. Building meaningful relationships with students, caregivers and school/community supports through a collaborative framework that is trauma informed and culturally safe. With a focused intervention to remove barriers to education by helping to stabilize and re-engage students with their education. Position will involve work with organizations that service children, youth and families to increase housing stability, develop life and career readiness skills, promote harm reduction and cessation of substance use, reduce violence, eliminate sexual exploitation, increase access to and utilization of mental health supports, and work towards an overall improvement in quality of life for in-risk youth.

REQUIRED ABILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS:

1. A Degree in Child and Youth Care.

2. Completion of a supervised practicum.

3. One-year similar or related experience including experience facilitating group support.

4. Ability to support staff and parents in behavior management skills.

5. Ability to work with minimal supervision.

6. Ability to work as a member of the educational team.

7. Valid Emergency First Aid Certificate.

8. Additional qualifications such as Food Safe may be required.

9. Successful completion of a specialized drug and alcohol course(s) at a recognized institution, to a minimum of 30 hours of instruction, which includes training in threat assessment and working with traumatized people.

10. A minimum of two years’ experience within the last 5 years working with youth with substance related issues.

11. Proven ability to build trusting relationships with youth.

12. Ability to work effectively with students, families, and outside agencies.

13. Ability to work collaboratively with school-based staff.

14. A valid Class 5 BC driver’s license.
