The District is seeking a Teacher of the Deaf / Hard of Hearing. This is an itinerant district position working out of the Henry Grube Education Centre effective immediately. Travel will be required.
This is a position of Special Responsibility and will be filled by competition.
Services provided by this position include:
Participate as a member of transdisciplinary team and consult with school-based, District and community partners to assist with the inclusion of learners with identified hearing differences;
Interpret the learner’s hearing differences and implications of these hearing differences
Assess the level of support required
Coordinate and prepare Individual Education Plans (IEP’s) for students designated with hearing difference
Coordinate referrals for hearing assessments, BC Deaf Education Committee (BCDEC), and Auditory Outreach Provincial Resource Program (POPDHH) referrals etc.
Identify and order materials and technology and coordinate hearing technology repair
Monitor learner use of hearing aids, FM systems and other technology that assists student learning and communication
Provide the classroom teacher with information regarding the role of Education Assistants in the implementation of strategies for students who are Deaf / Hard of hearing
Provide or arrange professional development/in service surrounding hearing and hearing differences for learners, teachers and paraprofessionals
Provide consultation for parents of learners with hearing differences
Model and provide information regarding inclusive practices
Help develop self-advocacy for students with identified hearing differences
Coordinate Kindergarten hearing screenings and referrals
Qualifications:
Valid BC Teaching Certificate
Diploma or Master’s degree in Education of the Deaf / Hard of Hearing or certified by the Canadian Association of Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CAEDHH)
Recent Classroom Teaching Experience (minimum 2 years)
Valid BC Driver’s License
Fluency in American Sign Language (Preferred)
The starting annual salary for this Teacher position ranges from $64,594 to $106,217, prorated to FTE. Placement on the grid is based on length of service and qualifications in accordance with the collective agreement.
